Teddy Lupins' bright purple eyes opened up and awoke to the world going on around him. His eyes focused on the Quidditch Mobile hanging above him and the playpen. Tiny Golden Snitches and broomsticks moved around each other in waves and loops.
His view was soon obscured by a head of dark, unruly hair belonging to Teddy's godfather, Harry Potter. Green eyes smiled down at Teddy as Harry picked him up from the playpen and into his arms.
“Hey, sleepy head. Wondered when you would wake up.”
Harry turned and Teddy was presented the view of the rest of the room, and the other two people in it: his grandmother, Andromeda Tonks, who was a greying woman with dark circles under her eyes and a sad smile on her face sitting in the high back chair and Harry's girlfriend, Ginny Weasley, a petite redhead with a caring gaze and a coy smile sitting on the floor with her back against the couch in the room.
Anyone taking a peek into the room would see the nervousness and awkwardness between the people in the room but none would doubt how much each cared for the little boy in Harry's arms.
“How's our Little Lupin?” asked Andromeda, as she was handed Teddy.
“Feeling like his normal, stinky self,” quipped Harry before sitting down next to Ginny. “Didn't see his nose twitching one bit, I reckon he slept off that cold.”
“And I'm sure the elixir Madam Pomfrey Floo'd over had nothing to do with it,” answered Ginny, elbowing Harry in the side.
Harry looked ready to retort but Andromeda was in no mood for the couple's flirting antics at the moment.
“Regardless, I think my grandson is well enough to give it another try,” Andromeda said as she set Teddy seated on the floor.
“Are you sure, Mrs. Tonks?” spoke up Harry tentatively. “Maybe, we shouldn't push Teddy too hard. He'll learn when he's ready.”
Andromeda stiffened and met Harry's concerned gaze. “I think I know if he's ready or not,” she replied shortly. “I raised Nymphadora and I'm doing my best with her son. I don't think your own experiences of childhood however shaky that they are would be enough to make you an expert.”
Harry's eyes narrowed but Ginny's restraining hand on his forearm kept him from talking.
“Harry only wants what's best for Teddy, Andromeda, just like we all do. And don't deny that you know that,” said Ginny quietly with a pointed look. “I imagine what Harry went through with his relatives was much like you experienced with your own, in that afterward you knew what you missed out on and would make sure that the children in your life wouldn't experience the same thing.”
Andromeda's attitude lost its edge as she nodded to Ginny's words. “You're right of course, Ginevra.” She ignored the younger witch's bristling at her full name - much like her daughter did - and continued talking this time to Harry. “I need to apologize, Harry, sometimes I forget I'm not alone in loving young Ted here.”
Ginny smiled at Andromeda but after a few seconds of no acknowledgment from Harry, both women turned to Harry. “What's-”
“Shush!” whispered Harry fervently. “He's doing it.”
Andromeda and Ginny saw Harry on his knees staring straight ahead with a bright, shining smile on his face and his arms held out as young Teddy Lupin struggled up from his seated spot on the floor and slowly teetered and tottered his way across the floor until he jumped/fell into Harry's arms.
The young boy smiled up at his godfather. “Dada.”
Harry stared shocked at Teddy before looking up and sharing glances with Andromeda and Ginny. Each matched his bittersweet smile and watery eyes. They all thought of Teddy's parents that should be sharing in this moment, but each felt honored and proud to be able to stand in for them and looking down at the giggling boy in Harry's arms they all knew they would support that boy for the rest of their lives.
Teddy was content to burrow himself into Harry's warmth clueless as to how much he affected their lives and brought the people in that room together into a different kind of family, Teddy's.
