Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
Since I was busy finishing my
ficlet, I didn't get to mention that I went to see the
new Street Fighter movie on Friday. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise but I have played the games in arcades, watched a few episodes of the SF II anime and read a few of the comic books. Even saw the old movie in the early 90's starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (hey i was like 10 or younger!), but I mostly went to see this one because this was Smallville's Kristin Kreuk's first big movie role and I wanted to support her.
First off, I'm happy i only paid $6 for my ticket. It's defintely not a movie I'd want to own, and I'll probably never watch it again. The story was decent and had potential, but the script was bad (some of the lines and scenes were really bad!) and the direction left a lot to be wanted.
Kristin and Michael Clarke Duncan were probably the best performances, Chris Klein was shoddy as a tough guy cop, and Robin Shou (Lou Kang from the Mortal Kombat movies) looks really old now - don't know if it was just makeup or not.
Because of the new direction of filming adaptations (making it grim and gritty), they dropped the familiar costumes of the characters (like the x-men movies, upcoming GI JOE) even going so far as only having Chun-Li have her trademark hair balls/buns in only one scene in the entire movie! Vega did have his mask and claw blades but that's about it. Chun-Li had her moves but the only one that looked really silly was where she stands on her head and twhirl kicks.
Bison was blonde. WTF?! And had a daughter named Rose who he had infused with his good side when she was in the mom's tummy. It was strange. MCD played Balrog, some dude was Vega, Robin Shou was Gen, and there was a throw away mention of Ryu at the end of the movie that left the possibility of a sequel (which probably won't happen).
The biggest sign to me that this movie probably wasn't going to be that good was when the movie started off with narration by Kristin Kreuk. This narration continued popping up throughout the movie and I have yet to find a good film that has that much narration if any at all. The movie took itself so seriously that honestly I think the old JCVD Street Fighter movie was probably more fun to watch. I wish Kristin luck with her next film choice, hopefully it's better than this one.
Any one else venture out to see it?
