I finally had the chance to see this film last Saturday and outside of an instagram I completely blanked on talking about it online, but I’m rectifying that now.
- Nearly every time I had heard a review about the film, the recurring negative to the film would be Kristen Stewart’s performance. Now maybe I’m biased because I sat through (barely) the horror of New Moon but this was light years better and I’m sure it’s because of the material.
- I actually thought Charlize Theron was a bit over the top at times, and really took away from the menacing feel of her character that built up over her consuming sacrifices.
- I thought the dwarfs were great, especially Bob Hoskins and Ian McShane. I only wish that maybe they were introduced earlier because their part in the story seemed fairly insignificant.
- And then having it be the kiss from the Huntsman that wakes Snow White and not the Prince really won me over. The idea that the Huntsman could connect the girl he was protecting with the wife he could not protect and when he thought he failed again the power of his love … It really makes me want more between the two and the triangle of the prince included and the responsibility of being queen weighing on the relationships.
- A sequel is a really tantalizing concept and I’m really bummed that the Kristen/Director scandal really seems to have ended any chance of that happening. And while I’m sure Chris Hemsworth could carry the movie himself, it would not be the Hunstman story I would want to see, one without Snow White.
There were some dull moments, and some random ones (the white horse) but it is VERY visual and worth a watch, especially on Blu-ray.
