I was so busy during the week that I didn't get to mention that I made it out last weekend to the local movie theaters to see Thor. Too late to see it in IMAX (forgot that Pirates 4 would snatch up those screens) and since I had heard mostly negative comments on the 3D conversion I avoided that too and settled for good ole 2D.
I'll be the first to admit that I was really worried about this movie, I wasn't sure how the costumes would look in action after seeing the promo pictures and I feared what exactly the story would have an earthbound Thor doing in a world where there no powered heroes or villains yet technically. BUT afterward it's safe to say that this movie exceeded my expectations several times over.
Chris Hemsworth was a fantastic Thor. I was worried that it would feel strange not to have Thor-speak but he played the role so perfectly and I was laughing so much at the right times like whenever he got hit by the car. Anthony Hopkins was brilliant as Odin. I was worried with his stature and frame that he would not be an imposing presence but I was so wrong. Tom Hiddleston was stellar as Loki. I really liked how you could see his mischievous and self-serving sides but that in the end he was only trying to prove his worthiness as king. It sparked a fic idea in my head of what if the story went another way (another AU story how surprising of me ... lol).
And Heimdall was so amazing and powerful feeling as the guardian of the Rainbow Bridge. I really enjoyed the Asgard parts of the story so much (outside of Rene Russo's character that felt unnecessary) that I hope that if there is a Thor 2 it deals more over there than on Earth to be honest.
I really liked Sif and the Warriors Three, they were so much fun and while there was the use of the name Donald Blake, I was disappointed that they didn't actually do the full thing. And because of that I really wish they had just not done the romantic angle with Jane because it felt much too quick. And I might be a little Natalie Portman'd out. Every time I see her it feels like she is the same person - if that makes sense.
I actually want to see a Thor sequel more than an Avengers movie to be honest. I liked the Hawkeye cameo but it didn't make me itch for an Avengers movie. All of these Asgardians were so fantastic that I hate the idea of not seeing them again. The best thing about the crossover for me has to be Agent Coulson, a character who seemed like an afterthought in the first Iron Man but has since grown on me and I really enjoyed his scenes with Thor. Coulson > Fury. I was really surprised with how funny the film was and it really balanced out the action. There was so much good in this that it might end up my favorite Marvel movie to date.
