One thing that annoys me in this new internet world of realtime news when it comes to entertainment is that you almost have to be offline to not be spoiled anymore, especially when things like casting news isn't considered spoiling. So I was heading into "Fortune" with some trepidation, the news that this was most likely Allison's last episode and then that this was going to be a "hangover" style episode which isn't an original idea but I admit it was something new for Smallville.
That said, this was probably the funniest episode of the show in years or maybe ever. I was confused by the fact that everything seemed to point to the characters heading off to Vegas but instead were still in Metropolis - only the casino/seedy side of Metropolis that was apparently far enough for none of them to return to their homes outside of Clark taking Chloe and Tess to Watchtower.
Clark under the effects of the magic wine was hilarious. His powers going wacky and him super-speeding into the building or taking out the fake bank robbers and putting the money truck in the barn was spectacular. Then that this episode put Clark, Chloe & Tess working together in a cohesive unit we have never seen on the show before was great. And then there was the goodbye to Chloe. It still seemed weird that all of a sudden she's saying goodbye when there was no hint to it in other episodes but still I was glad that there was a nice scene representing Clark and Chloe's status as life-long best friends.
Smallville had it all set up, Chloe had made her goodbyes to Clark, then to say goodbye to Oliver and end Chlollie forever. Then they went ahead and decided that her "going all over the world to help other heroes achieve their greatness" meant becoming a reporter (yay!) at Star City Register. Of all the places... Star City, home of the Green Arrow. Not Coast City, Gotham City, Keystone City, Central City, Gotham City, New York City (just to name a few other popular DC cities) they have her go to Oliver's city. And then the whole drunken "wedding certificate" to further cement Chlollie's existence. Which is bullshit because unless Oliver is not showing up again with the show, I don't see the point outside of some perceived notion that a person can't have a happy ending unless they are attached to someone (see the pairing off of Emil/Tess, which while hilarious falls into the whole pairing off syndrome this show has had since S9). I would have liked if she had said she was the new international reporter for the Daily Planet, thus giving her a way to travel around and do all this hero grooming she talked about. Honestly, I can just ignore the Chlollie and I'm just glad Chloe is alive.
I do find some hypocrisy in the fact that they made a big deal of Chloe being Lois' Maid of Honor and now she's pretty much not going to be around unless the wedding happens offscreen which would be HILARIOUS. And the show's persistence about Chlollie also bugs me because I really wanted to see Tess/Oliver happen before the show was over. Especially now that she seems to be one of the group now. At least "Luthor" gave us a glimpse of other reality Tess/Clark which was really fun outside of the whole Clark being a jerk thing.
I was really disappointed that the show was created by Zatanna's mischievous ways with the magic wine but she was noticeably absent from teh show. I know the actress was trying to work it out with her schedule to make the show and I guess that fell through, making the episode feel weird without the main cause of the trouble around to laugh/fix things. I really find it strange how Emil seems to only show up when the group is doing personal things these days (engagement party, this episode's night out). It almost feels like if the group got together in the old days and had Whitney around hanging too. Just doesn't feel right.
