April Comic Book Highlights & Lowlights

And you thought I was just a DC fanboy. ;)

Week of April 7:
Best - (MARVEL) Uncanny X-men #523 - It wasn't the Terry Dodson art that made me like this issue (I used to be a fan of his art style but my tastes must be changing - Cliff Chiang FTW), it was the scenes between Cable and Hope that I adored. I had always assumed Hope was going to be used in some way to bring back Jean, but now I have this feeling that Hope was created to replace Jean's role in the universe and be someone that wouldn't break up Scott/Emma since she's like his grand daughter sort of. I'm fine with this. Hope is awesome.
Worst - (DARK HORSE) Star Wars Purge One-Shot - I only read it because it was Star Wars but it ended up being one of these Vader got ahead of himself and let his vengeance drive him away from his focus costing the Empire losses that made the Emperor punish him. Nothing I wanted to read.

Week of April 14:
Best - (DC COMICS) Brightest Day #0 - I liked the David Finch cover and I enjoyed the Arthur/Mera scenes in the water. I am finding me liking the idea of shipping them and I hope an Aquaman title spins out of BD. I did not like the interior art that much, and I absolutely despise the fact that they're basically shoving aside the Kendra Saunders version of Hawkgirl now that Shaiera is back and remembers everything. Just another step in DC's ladder of ruining Roy Harper.
Worst - (MARVEL) Amazing Spider-man Presents Jackpot #3 - I don't read ASM because of OMD/BND but sometimes I'll read these minis/one-offs hoping for something sweet I can cling to. And since Jackpot was a character that looked similar to MJ I was always endeared to the idea of the superhero. Of course that Jackpot was killed, and now the original Jackpot (long story) was guilted into taking back what she gave away and they went the way that her happy family was attacked as a result and she lost her husband. Yeah this is something I want to read. NOT.

Week of April 21:
Best - (MARVEL) Firestar #1 - I wish this was a start of an ongoing but no it's a one-shot. A sequel of sorts to the storyline that was in Marvel Divas, centering around one of my favorite characters, Firestar. I didn't really like the plot in that, and I'm trying to get my head around the fact that they "youngified?" Firestar. Apparently she's a college student, and feels like someone Marvel would rather teamup with Young Avengers than say Spider-Man. She's one of the characters I'd ship w/Peter Parker. Probably tied for third with Felicia/Black Cat behind Gwen & MJ.
Worst - (DC COMICS) Batman: Streets of Gotham #11 - I originally picked up this series because this was written by Paul Dini but I have to say I've really been disappointed by the stories that have been in this book. In fact the arc with ManBat & Huntress that was in this title was a fill-in arc he didn't even write I think. He writes Batman in a way that you can't tell it's specifically Dick, but the big misstep is how badly he writes Damian, making him really OOC. I'm getting close to dropping it.

Week of April 28:
Best - (MARVEL) X-FORCE #26 - Have tissues ready when you read this issue as the journey to return Hope to the X-men reaches its climax in a very dramatic way as numerous X-men sacrifice themselves to make it possible. The X-Force art was outstanding as usual, I don't hear many people raving about it but they should be. I like this style better than Dodson or Land on Uncanny.
Worst - (DC COMICS) Detective Comics #826 - I'm missing Rucka already. I really liked the idea of Batwoman taking over as the main character of Detective and I wish that they had kept that going even though Rucka is stepping away and Williams is taking over the Writing/Art duties whenever her title starts. I didn't read Hine's previous forays into Arkham Asylum and I have little interest in Arkham now.
