Apparently, some group has taken it upon itself to clean up ff.net:
http://civilinitiative.blogspot.com/2010/08/redbotton-issue-and-what-it-means-for.html I don't think any of my fic would get dinged, though it's possible - I do tack short song quotes to the beginning of chapters sometimes. Still, I have everything backed up, and it's all on LJ anyway. If they want to report me, then whatever. That's not the point.
The point is WTF?? What on earth would make someone even dream that they have the right to deem themselves the arbiter of good fic? There is a LOT of crap on ff.net. I don't know that anyone would deny that. There are fics that annoy me. There are fics that make me cringe. There are fics that make me think, "Wait...are those even words? Are you sure?"
You know what I do when I find one of those fics?
I don't read it.
We're all here to have fun with our respective fandoms. Unless your Next, Back, and Close buttons are broken, badfic is not hurting you. This is simply vindictive and petty.
I understand that some of what they're reporting are things that violate the TOS. For some of it, I understand - it's related to copyright issues, or underage readers. I'm having trouble, though, seeing how things like script format, or so-called "interactive fic," are hurting anyone.
(Yes, I know - if you don't like the TOS, then don't play there. That's true, and that's exactly why, if I DO get dinged for my song quotes, I'm not going to whine about it. At the same time, there isn't anything wrong with questioning a policy.)
Yeah. This post gets the mean robot icon, because that's exactly what they are. :-P
