18/30 Meme: A Typical Working Day

This happened a week ago:

Retirement Countdown

so the "My Typical Workday" meme (which I spotted on
lamentables' journal) seems like a good way of celebrating, since there will only be a few more of them.

  • 7:00 a.m.: Swim groggily toward wakefulness
  • 7:01-7:30 a.m.: Grope for phone, read messages, squint at Twitter feed for a while, check weather, and get marching orders for the day
  • 7:30-8:00 a.m.: Feed cat(s). Perform ablutions of greater or lesser magnitude, depending on the weather, the day, and how many fucks I give
  • 8:00-8:20 a.m.: Hair and makeup, almost always while listening to an audiobook, which staves off the boredom of hair and makeup. Possibly an espresso
  • 8:20-8:30: Take a pile of supplements, tidy up the kitchen a little. Throw on today's outfit. Organize today's handbag. Clip on badge. Grab keys. Don helmet.
  • 8:30-9:00 a.m.: Ride bike four miles downtown to work, usually while listening to an audiobook
  • 8:50 or so, some days: Get stuck on the Steel Bridge while it goes up for a barge
  • 9:01 or so: Lock bike in the Portland Building underground garage and go up to the 14th floor
  • 9:01-9:08: Make a pot of coffee, log on, look at email
  • 9:09-10:30: Grope towards a plan of work for the day, answer the easy emails
  • 10:30-10:45: Eat breakfast. Generally yogurt and blueberries, generally standing at my desk, generally while doing something on my computer
  • 10:45-2:00: Work. Ish. This may involve answering support calls, documenting my job for the poor fuckers who inherit it on January 1, designing system tests, doing system tests, email galore, way more meetings than is good for a person, possibly some, um, glancing at Twitter and a few blogs...
  • 2:00-2:30 p.m.: Lunch. Generally at my desk, though I have a rule: no eating lunch while standing, and no working while eating lunch. So I perch, and read. Mostly fic.
  • 2:30-5:30 p.m.: More of same. Same same same. Thank god I can see the end of this road from here
  • 5:30-6:00 p.m.: Ride my bike the four miles home. Usually while listening to an audiobook. Bridge lifts are rarer in the evening than in the morning. Sometimes I hit the Steel Bridge at the same time as Amtrak, whose approaching-Union-Station whistle is the exact same chord as the opening of "Bohemian Rhapsody" so sometimes I sing "Is this the real life, is this just fantaseee...?"
  • 6:00-7:30 or so: Feed cat(s), feed self, read while eating
  • 7:30-10:30: This is the fabulous wildcard of my life. I might do anything! But, truthfully, most of it involves my laptop and/or my tablet. Sometimes
vampirefan and I chatwatch a show together. I love that.
  • 10:30-11:00: Throw tomorrow's breakfast and lunch together, maybe tidy up the kitchen a bit. Organize supplements. Take supplements. Audiobooks are involved. Geez, no wonder I have these "Audiobook Obsessed" badges from Audible
  • 11:00-11:30: Put together tomorrow's outfit--the whole thing, from underwear to earrings, because I cannot think in the morning
  • 11:30: Lie down. Probably read for a while. Put my phone on the charger
  • By midnight: Sawing logs and knitting up the ravel'd sleave of care
