I saw the Serenity trailer tonight on the big screen!

My audience (Hitchhiker's Guide) didn't have a real noticeable reaction to it, though a couple of fannish types in the row ahead of me exchanged meaningful looks. There might have been some nudging.

Seeing the trailer a) in full size and sound and b) with an audience of strangers, however, did let my step outside my own fannishness a little and see it with fresh eyes.

It's so BIG. There's Simon, all blue-lit and faux-military, and there's Mal's voice filling the big surround-sound auditorium, and Jayne ripping open his jacket, and of course River. Gotta admit, Summer looks fabulous on the big screen. Joss isn't wrong about her movie-star potential.

And Nathan. Guh. Translates very well into the monumental scale.

Someone not already in love with Firefly would come away with
  • Sci-fi! With Ass-Kicking Girl! Who doesn't look like a bimbo!
  • Funny lines! Funny pilot guy! Cynical handsome dude with gun and attitude.
  • Gritty and messy (especially compared to the shiny and ultra-high-budget Episode III trailer that preceded it).
  • Wow, that assassin walking through the liquid photo of ass-kicking pretty girl is a really cool effect.
...in about that order.

Would this make them want to see it? I'm not sure I sensed any appointments being made for "This Fall"--it feels like a preliminary trailer. But an intriguing one. It says, "Different and new," even without benefit of the titles that actually say that.

I think the trailer serves its function well: tantalize and intrigue. Hopefully a little more to come as the release date approaches.

Oh, and I loved every minute of Hitchhiker's Guide.
