I'm...cautiously ecstatic, if that's possible. It's a big cut in pay for a big raise in time. Not a bad deal, but a very unfamiliar one. I keep thinking I should do some planning, but the irony is, I really don't have time to sit and focus on it until it's already here.

Which I totally plan to do.

Yeah, I understand that. It's a big change in your life. I think it's easier to save money on a lot of things when you have more time - food, for instance. You can do more cooking and preparing on your own rather than, say, buying bagged salads or other more expensive foods. When you don't have to drive as far for work or put out as much money for clothes and shoes and whatnot you can save money. But it's still a big adjustment. Give yourself time to make the transition.

I found that since I stopped working at a regular job (I work from home now, doing freelance writing) I got sick less because now I can actually sleep as long as I need. That's a definite plus, too!

All excellent points. I've already done a lot of the cost-cutting you mention: no car (that's the single biggest one) and all home-cooking from basic ingredients. I've been living a pretty simple life, as American lives go, for the past several years, which is part of the reason I'm able to retire now.

But there is still plenty of room for cutbacks that I probably won't even feel. I certainly won't be needing many new clothes!

The sleep thing is so major, isn't it? Sleep shortage is epidemic in our society, and adequate sleep is a major component of health. (Also, do you think getting sick less was also related to not being in crowded offices?)

Yes, I suppose that reduction of time spent with people who were sick made a difference as well as the sleep. Blessed sleep! :-)
