I saw Lady Gaga's 'Alejandro' video today. I'm seriously late in viewing it, making me a bad little monster for neglecting it, but since I was so wrapped up in making my Hugh Laurie birthday picspam, I couldn't lift my head. I'm still in a daze from Mr. Laurie, but now I've resurfaced, with more time to devote to Mama Monster, I can only say...
ASDFGHJKL;!!!!! OMG OMG OMG! XD XD
IT WAS AMAZING!!!! lol
I absolutely love the song, one of my favourites from 'Fame Monster', and I didn't know what to expect from the video. With Gaga being Gaga, I knew it was going to be memorable. The teasers intrigued me and made it all the more exciting. Her hair, the outfit, the black and white, the cuts between her dancing alone, her on a bed and the muscular guys around her... I knew it was going to be epic!
I was so psyched for 'Telephone' when it was FINALLY released after so many times being pushed back. But my excitement for 'Alejandro' t was different to my excitement for 'Telephone's' release. I was just glad to see it. I remember Gaga saying at her concert in Dublin that it would be released that week, and I was like 'Yay!' but it got pushed back. Boo! I still enjoyed it though. :)
The hype was worth it, but this video... this was so different. Gaga's look and the whole atmosphere of the video from the very beginning seemed so far removed from 'Telephone', and in a way seemed more artisitc like 'Bad Romance'. It was dark, it was beautiful, and when the violin melody began to play, I thought 'I'm going to love this with a passion'.
One of the images that really struck me on my first viewing was that of the coffin being carried in the snow, with Gaga leading the procession holding a heart with nails through it and surrounded by barbed wire. One of the interpretations that I've read on
ladygagafans about the video was that the heart and the coffin represented the former love that she has to let go of, such as is the lyrics of the song, and the 'monster' associated with 'Alejandro'. That struck a chord with me. I can only imagine how hard it is to let go of someone who has been part of your life for so long, when you thought that it would be forever. The pain, the heartbreak, the mourning: it is the death of an old way of life.
Of course, I have to mention the solo dance, with Gaga in the much-recognized black cat-suit from the teaser. I was really anticipating that moment, and it didn't disappoint. She looked incredible. I loved the effects with the fade outs to black in time with the music. :)
The imagery, the themes, the choreography, all combined made 'Alejandro' so brilliant. Gaga's done it again.
I haven't seen the video enough times to make a full commentary, but these are the parts that I found the most memorable.
Some of comments I've read on
ladygagafans are interesting and deep. That's what I love about Lady Gaga as an artist: everything in her work is left open to interpretation, and there's never a simple answer. There's so many layers in her recent work, with 'Bad Romance', 'Telephone' and 'Alejandro'. Her videos have numerous layers that provoke the viewer to think for themselves, to choose their own view. There can be many complexities to be found in her videos, all set for the viewer to unravel.
So now I'm using LJ more regularly, I've made a request to join the Lady Gaga LJ community. :) First Huddy, and now Gaga, yay!! :) :) Can't wait to join the rest of the little monsters.
Anyway, I could gush about Gaga all day, but I have to watch the video again and download screencaptures. :D :D There are some moments that I simply have to Photoshop. :) Also, I have some serious iconing to do, and I'll post them here soon. :) So now I will leave a still of 'Alejandro':
Don't call my name, don't call my name,
Alejandro...
