What's Our Sputnik? by Thomas L. Friedman
My own addendum to this is that I feel like the work I do is supportive of what Mr. Friedman describes. My work is meant to spark the imagination through entertainment. And beyond that, the artists I work with and myself spend our free time carrying on the non-corporate version of this ideal.
I know that my employment rests on the "business" of entertainment (and gambling*), but the quality of our productions would be below second-rate if we who do the work weren't so fired up about what we do.
And if you're wondering how my hair/makeup ties in to "... science and education ... more students studying math and people genuinely wanting to build the nation,” then I give you also my coworkers who use skills more commonly seen on aircraft carriers, heavy construction and large-scale mining. None of us could be where we are without such study and drive.
* This is Las Vegas after all, and MGM cuts my checks, not Cirque.
