apparently getting to tibet requires hacking through a freakin' jungle of red tape. i have to get my chinese visa here but the tour organizer said i must not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES tell them i'm actually going to tibet. the plans to go through Kathmandu were recently thwarted by unsettling political upheavals so i'll have to fly into Chengdu BY MYSELF 3 days ahead of schedule, and arrange my own lodgings. even then it takes three days for them to validate my visas/passports whilst i'm cooling my heels in a foreign (presumably still pretty communist) country alone. the road to tibet looks like it will be packed with guardposts, suspicious soldiers, and numerous other bullshit ways the Chinese government can keep well-meaning people from going there to do decent deeds for other human beings.
i feel confident enough to travel the legnth and breadth of Thailand alone, but all this diplomatic fubar has conjured up images of chinese prison cells 4 sq ft in diameter.
