I was outside, petting the neighbor's mew-less kitty today. One of the older neighbor girls (one of the cat's owners) was also outside. She smiled and said the cat likes me.
I asked if the cat ever goes inside - me and my roomies had suspected she's an outdoor only cat. The girl said a little sadly, "No. We have the dog inside and Naeveh's [the toddler] always tormenting her."
I feel very bad for this wonderful cat. She's the most friendly cat I've ever met and it saddens me to think she's probably never slept on a pillow or curled up to sleep next to one of her humans. And on these oddly cold nights, I often find myself wondering if she's warm enough.
And that's another thing: I wonder if its hard for Angel (the cat) to recognize exactly who her humans are. I mean, she has certainly demonstrated her knowledge as to which door belongs to her humans, but is it just because that's where her food and water come out of? What constitutes ownership in a kitty mind? Would she consider me one of her humans because I stop to pet her almost *every* time our paths cross? Because I sometimes go out of my way just to give her [seemingly much welcomed] attention?
*sigh* These people next door have no idea the gem in black fur they have.
