There's nothing quite like rattling the chains of your old man.
I was talking to my Dad about my paper on substance abuse, crime, and health disparities among African Americans, and he started off on a news article about tinkers. Tinkers, for those of you who don't know them, are gypsies/nomads who are notorious in Ireland for violence, theft, litter, and are generally very irritating people because theyharrass you and want your money--or that's what my Dad says--Brad Pitt's people in the moive "Snatch" are tinkers. I told Dad that I wasn't a fan of stereotyping a lot of people, and he sputtered that it's not a stereotype if it's true. I went on to use black men being unfairly introduced into the criminal justice system as another stereotype, to which he said "If that many are involved, maybe they're breaking the law!".
We're both stubborn, so I decided to press his sensitive issue button.
I said, "Well, how would you feel if people said that all Palestinians are terrorists?"--to which he sputtered that all Israelis are terrorists....
I think I made my point.
