MARVEL IS BREAKING ME
Okay. Okay. Okay.
I've been reading a lot of Winter Soldier fic and I have issues.
First of all, how does one even write in this fucking universe? And this isn't limited to Marvel, but comics in general. Everything has been retconed four bazillion times. Everyone dies. Everyone comes back to life. Everyone gets weird powers. Everyone has their powers taken away. Everyone gets turned into animals, has kids, wards, pets, and gets magically transformed into Anime characters. They switch names and identities and genders and just. I don't. I can't.
What the fuck sticks? Anything? Ever? It's like every beef folks have with Moffat's Who but times a million.
And while part of me, the part that loved writing in the Whedonverse because of it's malleability, loves that there are no rules for writing these characters, conversely, it's making very hard to find the hearts of the characters and write stories for them.
And then there are idiosyncrasies.
This is especially the case in the Winter Soldier and Captain America fics.
I like Tumblr as much as the next person, but the likelihood of either of those two thawing out and immediately embracing every nuance of modern society, social justice and sex and gender theory seems wildly unlikely. I mean, don't get me wrong, I fully believe Cap embodies all that is good and noble and well meaning. But it's tough for anyone outside a college classroom to be quite as PC as I've seen him written, and I didn't grow up Irish Catholic in the Depression. Handwaving away the cultural and religious mores he grew up with and failing to contextualize his poverty and illness in the time period is just...really sloppy. But more than that, it's lacking truth and missing a huge opportunity to tell a better story.
I like porn too. But I like it well characterized.
So basically, what this means is I don't understand why the Marvel movies are going to kill Steve off when they haven't exactly been slavish to the source material in all its other incarnations, I don't like SuperPC!Steve and I like SuperPC!Bucky even less unless there is some kind of explanatory character arc there, and I don't know how to even begin writing my own fic because there's way too fucking much source material and it's all over the goddamn map.
Fuck it. Imma go read some coffeeshop AUs.
