YOU SAVED MY LIFE ONCE,
AND I WAS ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.
I STOOD BY YOUR SIDE, WE WERE INSEPARABLE.
NOW I'M JUST A WITNESS, A STRANGER REALLY, AS I WATCH YOU DISINTEGRATE.
YOUR FALLING APART, SLOWLY;
IT'S LIKE WATCHING THE WAVES EATING AWAY AT A CASTLE OF SAND ALONG THE SHORELINE.
YOUR SIGHS LIKE THE ROAR OF THE TIDE,
YOUR EYES, FILLED WITH THE SPRAY OF THE SEA.
WHEN WE BEGAN TO BUILD THIS CASTLE OF SAND AND STONES, YOU SAID IT WOULD NOT LAST FOREVER.
BUT WHAT YOU REALLY MEANT WAS NOTHING LASTS FOREVER.
YOU FOUND A TWIG AND LEAF TO PLACE ON TOP, YOU SAID IT WOULD MAKE OUR CASTLE STAND PROUD.
EVERYONE WOULD KNOW IT WAS OURS.
THE STARS WERE OUT THAT NIGHT AS WE WATCHED THE TIDE CORRODE OUR BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART,
UNTIL ALL THAT WAS LEFT WAS A PILE OF SAND, AND YOUR MAKESHIFT FLAG TO SERVE AS A MARKER OF WHAT HAD ONCE STOOD SO PROUDLY AMONG ALL THE OTHERS.
BY MORNING THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT.
WE SAID OUR GOODBYES, PARTED OUR WAYS.
AND I NEVER ONCE LOOKED BACK AS YOU WATCHED ME DEPART.
YOU SAID IT WAS YOUR FAULT, BUT DON'T BE SO SELFISH.
I WAS YOUNG, AFRAID, PREDICTABLE.
I FLED.
