so at school we're putting on three one acts, two of which are student directed, the other is directed by the teacher. the teacher's is called adaptation and she had to pick it last minute because our principal, being the... lovely person that he is, didn't decide to read the other script (bang bang you're dead) to a play that he'd asked her to perform until the night before. and THEN he decided that - hey - he didn't want them to do it.
the other student directed one is graceland and it's about these two female elvis fans. then there's mine... which i hurried to pick out all during the day.
well i had some obstacles.
first, we had an extended home room (i could only look for scripts the first two periods). then, i couldn't find a play that i liked. i found a handful of ones that looked promising (i didn't read them all the way through), but the teacher said none of them were any good. well, i'd picked out a play awhile before (called variations on the death of trotsky) and i had decided not to do it because it wasn't long enough. but i looked through the david ives collection anyway.
well after running around and running around and begging a freshman guy to be in my play (i'd decided trotsky would have to do after the teacher revealed that she'd decided that - hey - it would have to be 15 minutes long, even though she'd already said thirty), i was finally calmed. then i realized that one of the guys in the play (2M 1W) wasn't going to have a lot of time to work in rehearsals. so i gave him a smaller part. only it was too small.
so then i settled on a play about 3 monkeys who are trying to recreate hamlet. words, words words. another david ives.
then my freshman guy said, "yeah i might not be able to do it."
....
good thing the monkeys aren't gender specific, eh?
