Mobicon the 13th

May 16, 2010 12:08

So I got a call last week from amusingmuse, saying she and hubby were attending Mobicon this year. Since I had been planning to go anyway (and saving $$$ like madness), we arranged to meet up.

My boss was kind enough to give me the whole weekend off, and I actually considered going for the whole weekend, but decided instead to limit myself to Saturday because (a) I had to work Friday night as it turned out anyway and (b) I hadn't been to a con in a while and I didn't know if I'd hold up.

yuugimotoh, kayekytte and I all arrived at the hotel shortly after 9 am on Saturday. As it turned out, we were too early. XD So we got registered and waited for the merchant's room to open up. We went to the Hospitality Suite for breakfast (mmm, PB&J) and watched a bit of spooky anime (the theme this year was horror, of course). Shortly after 10 it was off to buy shit. I hooked up with amusingmuse in the merchant's room and after a long perusal (I got a couple of T-shirts and a J-horror DVD), we went to lunch at Olive Garden.

After we got back we watched a martial arts/dance demonstration and then yuugimotoh had to go to work and kayekytte took her purchases home. I joined a semi-local SF club, Club 504 out of NOLA, and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening wandering, watching spooky anime, and basking in the general atmosphere.

I was carrying with me my newest doll, a Liv Daniela who's gotten a complete face repaint, repositioned eyes, and new blushing. Her name is Chae-ri and I even cobbled her up her own little name badge. I had several changes of costume and clothing for her, including a cute little gothic lolita outfit she wore for most of the day. She got her picture taken several times and if I come across any of them, I'll post it for you guys. As a side note, I can't say enough good things about the Liv dolls. They're affordable, yet the manufacturing quality, IMNSHO, surpasses that of either Obitsu or Volks 27cm offerings. They're not quite as posable, but they're perfectly adequate for most needs and they do actually have double-hinge knee joints that are almost identical to Obitsus. If your kid wants an Asian doll to customize, get him/her a Liv. It's a great first doll and can serve as an introduction into the BJD hobby.

Anywho, back to Mobi-con. I spent my last hour at the con chatting at a table with amusingmuse and her hubby. We reminisced about old times and joked about the irony that, in the days before the Internet, she and I would write long, rambling letters to each other every single week. Nowadays, it takes an act of Congress passed by a two-thirds majority to get a two-line email out of me. XD

When yuugimotoh got there, both of us wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of the night at the con...but she had to go to work at 8 this morning. On the way home, she and I both resolved that we would both get the whole weekend off next year for Mobicon and we would actually rent a hotel room for Saturday night so we could have crash space at the con itself. (So next year you all get to remind me that we're doing this. XD)

It was great being at a con again, and it was wonderful hanging out with amusingmuse again, someone I've known longer than anyone including my life partner. Hey, next year we can do the goth loli thing together and show these kids how it's done! XD
