Is it weird that I'm reading silently to myself imagining other "voices" read the book?
It is a nice, cutesy book and I would appreciate a book like this as a gift... BUT BUT BUT!
"Don't make me foolish in front of other people" Hint of controlling behaviour? Kinda. I think foolish can be attractive sometimes, not that I would go out of my way to create the situation. Grace and good spirit goes a long way.
But but but there are problems with this book. I mean, I must problematize this whole book. This is generally my problem: critical analysis. I do agree with some of the text. But first, seeing how Hallmark produced this book and bounded these photos and text together, re-produced the book, I'm weary this book may actually genuinely mean what it says and depicts. Meaning is what we each make it and aren't these images stock photo and isn't that text kind of from a big pool of other letters? At one point, those words did mean something, and to the person who receives this book it could mean something and mean alot.
Another thing, the repetition of "please" unsettles me, for some reason. It's "nice" and all, but... I dunno. Also, I could go off about class, race, "American dream", gender roles but I mean, that's pointless now because this book was made in the 70s.
Do I only look for negative things? No, generally I do see the good. But, I feel much more happy with learning and understanding a person, a book, or something over time, on deep levels.
I make things complicated...
This comment by kmuzu sums it up for me:
"This book has changed my life. I am now a complete man … with a mustache"
also the comment "I really liked it, maybe because I’m a girl, but I shed a tear"
