Yesterday, I met with Ashley and Steven to see Mike Parsons at Chapters. Hope to see his show at Definitely Superiour this week.

"The thing with these is that they do show agony and torment, but in the smallest places I put people fishing or talking," he explains in a quiet, even voice.

"A lot of people look at it and go, "Whoa, this is just evil.' But if you actually take the time to sift through it you can find the nice parts."

He pauses for a second, as if coming to a realization for the first time. "I guess that's kind of like life."

I asked him about what media he was using, and he explained about how he is using india ink which is quick to apply to the paper and the ability to achieve a variety of effects. And in addition pretty economic for this particular size of painting.

And later I asked him about what inspires him to draw and being from a big city like Toronto (which seems relevent)... he explained about the buildings in a circular motion and inside the people make the city go around. But how on the other hand, technology (like our iPods, cellular phones, telephones, ) runs the city. And then I notice the hairy robots and how detailed and quick - almost feverish - he is with the ink. The black on white is just so bold, so effective and now I want to ask him if he likes to use other colours.

He was very polite and quiet and it was interesting to just watch him paint.

It was something along those lines.

My favourites would have to be the hairy robot on the far right, the city buildings in a circular motion, and the character with the eyes flying off.

I wished him luck as I left and he was returning to get more paper.
