“It was winter. In the night.”
“I thought we'd have more time.”
“Most deaths are not heroic.”
There was nothing that could be said or done to ease these thoughts, nothing that could make it better. That much, they both knew. They spoke largely of inconsequential things, pretending as if it had never been, as if they were both mere children of the desert with no past or future beyond the sands.
It has been nearly thirteen years since Soren first slipped into Stefan's bedroom, his hair still tied in the tattered green scarf, his cheeks brushed with the slightest bit of stubble. Again, there had been no words, only the softest touch of chilled lips to Stefan's own, the smallest graze of agile hand through sage-colored hair as the kiss was hungrily returned. Hands moved from hair to neck and down inside of lightweight robes, tongue darted between lips and teeth and rolled across the palate. It was not a chaste kiss, but Stefan knew better than to call it love.
Things, from there, moved at a pace that would be torturous for a beorc, but all too fast for men who'd live at least twice as long. Nights soon found Soren cradled in Stefan's arms, rarely facing him, but often whispering him questions without clear answers, the sort of things he could never find in books or scrolls. Stefan was patient, answering what he could, attempting what he could not. It seemed the latter was far more common, but he never minded. If patience was all he could give the sage, he'd give until he ran as dry as the desert around them.

“Please,” he'd gasped as he pulled Stefan closer, hands surprisingly rough and strong. And it was with a curious mix of hesitation and desire that Stefan kissed him again and made love to him, neither saying a word until Soren came with another's name on his lips and Stefan pretended not to notice. It was the first for more than one thing, that night, as Soren lay in his arms and sobbed.
It has only been about five years since Soren began looking at him, really looking at him, and smiling the same way he did for the children, both in the open and behind closed doors. The cloth remained on him, always, though it was too ragged now to tie anything back: instead, it stayed wound tight around his wrist, which seemed too bulky for the tiny mage Stefan once knew. Soren no longer shouted the names of dead men, but neither did he speak Stefan's, as if doing so would break the fantasy they'd woven. It was a fantasy they both knew couldn't last, but neither, out of twisted respect, dare try.
It has also been only five years since they learned of the death of Queen Crimea, who outlived her husband by over a decade. They heard tell that even in her growing age, she remained ever an inspiration.
“He would have been happy for her,” Soren had murmured, but without the tinge of agony in his quiet voice.

“I can remember him without it,” he'd said, and the matter was not spoken of again.
It was soon after that when Stefan first heard his name from Soren, whispered in his ear, spoken in the court, moaned in the bedroom. He felt, for the first time, that there were no ghosts watching him, judging him, like he had no one to say “Don't worry, I will be good to him” to.
It has been two years of sheer bliss.
But it has only been a few moments since the words fell from Soren's lips, since Soren's deft fingers ran between his own.
“I love you, Stefan.”
And it is now that he speaks his reply, in words, this time, for even the most quiet of understandings has words that must never be left unspoken.

That was beautiful ;A;
I love how you wrote Soren's gradual phases to the end.
Thank you so much for making my day, anon

This is the definitive Soren/Stefan fic for me, haha. Even as a fan, the only scenario I can see the pairing working out in is if Ike is out of the picture--and this is almost exactly how I imagine it happening (except maybe with Ike/Soren being in a relationship, but w/e). One of the things I love (and hate) about Ike/Soren is the whole different lifespans thing, and I think Stefan is able to provide, at the very least, a bittersweet ending for the remaining chapters of Soren's life following Ike's inevitable death.
Nobody (including the author) will probably see this but it's rare for me to keep coming back to read a fanfic, and the most recent FE (prompting a playthrough of PoR and later RD) is making me hungry for all the fics posted here back in the day.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling like an old man and just say: thanks for writing, anon!
