Nailah was sick of waiting.
She had returned to Hatari after long, hard-fought war, and she had managed to keep Rafiel alive for that long, which was impressive considering how often she mused that a strong breeze would push him over. Did he think she did so out of charity? Yes her instincts told her to protect those who needed it, but that only went so far, and he was an idiot if he thought she only kept him safe out of a sense of duty.
He was beautiful, for a male, and she'd never met anything nicer, and he was exotic and dumber than a stack of bricks for either refusing her, or not realizing what she wanted from him.
She had no idea what he was thinking, and she realized she never really had. He was a riddle wrapped in an incredibly polite enigma. When they came home - yes, it was his home now too, whether he knew it or not - he'd actually built a nest in her throne room. A real nest made of twigs and who knew what else. He'd also upgraded his selection of wing-cleaning oils, because he always smelled so good and it drove her sensitive nose insane. So clearly he felt at home.
He's moved in, that's a good sign, right? Too bad any and all attempts on her part to get his attention had failed horribly - she'd shown up in his bedroom naked and he gave her a bathrobe, and when she implied she didn't want one, he gave her a towel - and to make it worse, he ruffled his feathers around Volug and gave him the dirtiest looks.
What did that mean? If he was annoyed with her and her court, he should go back to Serenes Forest, to hell with him. Instead he stayed in Hatari, floating around her castle and bringing her tea, and was it just her imagination or was he taller? No, no, just his posture was better. She was sure if asked he would ramble on about peacetime and whatever. It had been a little bit of a relief for her to meet his siblings and to find out he wasn't the only one who wouldn't shut up about how nice balance felt.
Huh. His siblings. They were just as weird if not more so. She remembered how Leanne laughed and smiled as Naesala transformed and did something of an aerial dance for her; Nailah had thought it was kind of stupid, but apparently Leanne had approved. And Reyson had, now that Nailah thought about it, built a nest for Tibarn of all people, and when Tibarn mocked him for it, Reyson pushed him off one of many of Phoenicias' cliffs; Tibarn had turned the plunge into a bunch of flips that had Reyson face-palming fondly.
And then it hit her. “Stupid birds,” she muttered out loud, going to get some blankets to cover the twigs, for Rafiel's back's sake.
