I'm not sure if this is really what you wanted, OP. I tried to fill your prompt as best I could though. I hope that you like it. And I hope that Ranulf and Ike are somewhat character. I've never written them before.

Ranulf walked up behind Ike, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder. "It's funny seeing you now and remembering you when you were a kid."

"You knew me as a child?" Ike asked, sounding surprised.

"You don't remember me?" The cat laguz laughed. "I'm hurt. After all we went through together?"

------------------------------------------------------

Ranulf stared at the small beorc child sitting across the table and the little boy stared back. Then the boy sighed loudly and leaned his head in his hands.

"When are we going to do something fun?" the boy asked, his tone betraying his boredom and he looked deceptively innocent. At least as far as Ranulf was concerned.

"Soon, but right now you're to sit and think about what you just did," Ranulf growled. He hesitated a moment before adjusting his tone to a more pleasant one. With his luck and Ike's seeming tendency to do whatever would annoy him the most, the kid would probably go tell his parents and the king something along the lines of "Ranulf was mean and scared me" right after he squealed about the fact that his long suffering babysitter had just lost him. Except that Ranulf knew that he hadn't lost the boy. Ike had run off laughing and had announced, clearly quite pleased with himself, when Ranulf had finally tracked him down, that that had been a good game of hide and seek. Except, of course, that Ranulf hadn't be in on the "game". "I mean... running off like that was... dangerous."

"But I was bored! And it was just a game!" Ike whined loudly, causing Ranulf to wince and curse inwardly.

If that brat woke up the other brat, then he was going to lose his mind entirely and that was not going end well. The two children made a good pair. Spawn of evil number one and spawn of evil number two. At least the younger one couldn't run away as easily as her brother or run around him in circles, grabbing at his tail at each pass, even if it seemed that she needed a diaper change every time he turned around.

He held out a hand, trying to keep the panic out of his voice as he attempted to quiet the young boy. "Quieter, Ike. Mist is asleep remember and..."

"That's right!" Ike said, jumping up excitedly. "She's been sleeping a long time now though. Do you think that she's awake yet? Let's go check!" With that he raced towards the stairs that led to his sister's room.

"Wait!" Ranulf cried, as he chased Ike up the stairs, managing to grab the boy just as he was about to open the door to his sister's room. "She's sleeping!"

"How do you know that!" Ike demanded stubbornly. "Maybe she's just waiting for us to come get her to play. I would be."

Liar, thought Ranulf. The boy would not be sitting there nicely on his bed after waking up, simply waiting to be found. He'd have come down immediately and demanded attention, probably by grabbing the cat laguz's tail or ears if they were in reach. And Mist, he knew, would be screaming right now had she been awake. It seemed that she shared her brother's need for constant entertainment. "I'll make you a deal," he said, his voice as calm as he could manage. "If you promise to be quiet, then I'll open the door and check. Then when we see that she's still asleep, we'll leave."

Ike crossed his arms and tilted his head, appearing to be giving this situation serious thought. Ranulf was sure that he was plotting his next evil action. "Well... but what if she's awake and still laying down. Shouldn't we check on her?"

Ranulf's eyes narrowed. "If she's laying down then she's sleeping."

"But you don't know that!" Ike whined loudly. Very loudly.

There was a cry from inside the bedroom and Ranulf could feel his headache starting up again. He groaned and let himself into the room with Ike skipping happily ahead of him, running to his sister.

When were their parents supposed to return anyway? Surely, they must be done with whatever they had been doing with the king. They'd been gone forever. Or, Ranulf thought, perhaps it just seemed that way.

Mist squirmed in his arms wanting to go down on the ground, but he held her tightly as he tried to keep up with Ike who was running ahead of them. Why had he brought them outside again? At least in the castle there hadn't been that many ways for the boy to get himself into trouble, but out here... And, although Ranulf knew that he could normally outrun the boy easily if needed, he couldn't while carrying Mist. Especially not when she squirmed as she did now.

It was intensely frustrating. The children were both so contrary. Mist only wanted to be held when he had his hands full and she always wanted to run around when he couldn't put her down. They never wanted to eat or sleep at the same time. Most days Ike wouldn't nap at all actually, even though his parents always assured Ranulf that he'd probably go right to sleep. The boy seemed to have a never ending source of energy. It was just too bad that there didn't seem to be able to guide the boy in using that energy for something productive.

Ranulf looked around for Ike again, but didn't see the young beorc anywhere. He froze. Where? He'd only taken his eyes off him for a second!

With a groan, he went off in search of the missing child, holding the boy's sister tightly as she wailed loudly in his sensitive ears. It was going to be a long day...

-------------------------------

Ranulf laughed as he looked at his friend's now bright red face. "You were one serious handful as a kid."

Ike narrowed his eyes and, for a second, Ranulf saw that stubborn, rambunctious child in the young general's eyes. "You're making that up."

"I'm most certainly not," Ranulf laughed harder and there was real fondness in his voice as he spoke. As he looked back on those times now, he found that they were better memories then he'd realized. "What do I have to gain by making something like that up? I have a whole bunch more stories if you'd like..."

"No, no," Ike interrupted, holding up his hands with a laugh of his own. "I give in. If I acted like such a brat when I was a child then I'm sorry for it."

"Don't worry, Ike," Ranulf said with a mischievous glint in his eyes. "You're elected as babysitter should I ever have children. That might be enough to make us even."

Ike responded with a sigh.
