Went to see Les Mis tonight.

I quite liked it and all the actors were great, even Russell who I had a lot of trepidation about because I've never been especially fond of his singing, but I thought he did quite well in his solo numbers.Of course, it helped dramatically that he had ALL THE BEST OUTFITS.

Also, Eddie Redmayne was freaking amazing and totally stole the show.

I have to say though, I really prefer seeing it on stage. There was something flat about it on screen and my emotional connection was completely hindered by the ridiculous overuse of close-ups and the fact that the whole thing was so theatrical because it was all shot on sound stage. Seriously, I only cried twice! And once was when no one was singing! (it was something Rusty did)

I would have happily sacrificed live singing for location shoots because it would have brought some significant realism to the movie and made it seem more like a MOVIE rather than a filmed theater production. I didn't think the aspect ratio was wide enough either, and I bet that was purely to accommodate the close-ups.
