Today I walked into work 10 minutes early. Little did I know that it was perfect timing as the work load was being stretched paper-thin. I took the NOC phone and started putting out the proverbial fires. You see in my job I handle everything from running cables under the raised floor, to administering servers that are business critical. Today while I was on the phone walking a dedicated hosting customer though setting up FTP accounts, I was interrupted no less than 5 times regarding a co-lo customer requesting me by name. Not only is this unusual but, I didn’t recall making any appointments.

It was just after grilling the Security Guard that I realized that he was referring to a customer that had also been in the data center the day before. After I apologized to the Security Guard that I was preoccupied and hung up the phone, I recalled this customer calling me from the data center floor asking if there was a computer store in the area. Needless to say there is not one in the vicinity of Fulton County Jail so I offered to assist in any way I could. He then proceeded to ask me if I could get 4x25’ patch cables for him. I happened to be in a good/helpful mood, so I made the cables free of charge or worry.
Back to the 5 interruptions in my phone call; on the 3rd or 4th intrusion the Security Guard he informed me that the co-lo customer had arrived and brought with him a 12-pack of beer for me. While he told me this the customer I was on the phone with laughed as he heard this in the background. It's nice to end a call with the customer saying "Enjoy those beers"!
To this day, this is the most awesome token of appreciation a customer has ever given me. No matter how intense or grueling my career may be, it is by far the most gratifying experience I have ever lived.
This Bud is for you!
P.S. I think I just heard gunshots outside. That's just fucked up...
