Nac mac Feegle sock puppets

You may recall that last July I went to the second North America DiscWorld Convention (ie NADWCon held in Madison, Wisc this time), one of the great things they did this year was set up crafting projects (people teaching how to make some cool Discworld stuff).  I didn't make it to the talk on the sock puppets because  I was in line to be sure I got a good seat for the Good Omens talk w/Neil Gaiman joining Sir Terry Pratchett on stage.  But I stopped by the crafting room on Sunday, as the convention was winding down, to see what materials were needed and how to accomplish the task.

The inspiration for the sock puppets are characters from Pratchett's Discworld novels.  When the mac Feegles first appeared in the novel Lords and Ladies I found them a little annoying....  They are pictsies (NOT pixies!  LOL) based upon the picts of Northern Scotland, they are blue (but that may not be their natural skin color but from tattoos applied).  They are around 6 inches tall and very strong; they live to drink and fight.  They will fight anyone or anything including each other and themselves.   As I read the Tiffany Aching novels they did grow on me(!).

Here is an official portrait:

So you can see they all look different, so there is considerable lee way in how the sock puppets come out.

So here is how I made my sock puppets:
step one:   take a pair of blue socks (I have looked everywhere for light colored blue socks... the people who organized the craft session found some and I would love to know where they found them, I could only find navy blue) and turn them inside out.  Then sew two lines up the length of the foot...  when you are done cut between the two lines (this is done to make both the legs on one sock and the arms on the second sock).  Turn the sock back right side out and stuff with soft filling:

step two:
attach one sock to the top of the other...  this is where I REALLY wish I had attended the class, because my attachments are clumsily done...  there is probably a trick to it.  Then attach a kilt, feathers, a sword, and of course lots and lots of red hair:

Above is my first finished Feegle and below is my second completed Feegle sock puppet:

Now online I've found that some people have done a great job by crocheting their own Feegles:  Here is Daft  Wullie and here is Rob Anybody, but I'm afraid I don't know how to crochet (socks are a lot easier!).

So I'm going to make some more... and if I find some light blue socks I'm going to make even more!

LOL!  I've ordered a bunch of blue socks (not navy) online, I can't wait to get them!  In the mean time I've made two more  w/the socks I had:
