Interview Meme: Wynkat1313's Questions

Y'all know the drill - if you want 5 questions, ask!

1. How did you meet Freyr?
Regardless of which one, I can pretty well guarantee my first encounter with Freyr was through Hrafnar. I don't remember my first encounter all that clearly - it may well have been before I actually believed in Freyr. Logically, I can say it was almost certainly either seasword or DW.

Discovering Freyr's place in my life (or perhaps my place in His world?) came only after discovering Freya's, at which point I started connecting with onyxdubh, and got to know Freyr through him, and then directly on my own. This is also how I discovered my Papa Ghede's place in my life.

What I want to be clear about, though, is that these were indeed discoveries, not creations. Freya, Freyr, Papa Ghede and a couple of other powers I have relationships with have declared in no uncertain terms that They were with me long before that time, and I simply didn't have the capacity to percieve Them as such yet. Perhaps it's simply confirmation bias, but I can indeed track the pattern going backwards. For Freyr I find it as far back as 12 years old. For Ostara, Freya, and Papa Ghede I find signs in early childhood, and so on.

2. What do you like most about school?
Learning! Seriously, if I didn't love learning for its own sake I would never have put the time and effort into getting past all my damned issues with school. Yes, there are other practical reasons for putting in the effort, but they wouldn't be enough to keep me focused on the goal. Success requires motivation, and practical needs have unfortunately never been all that motivating for me.

3. What fandoms do you follow (or used to when you had time for such things?)
You mean what Fandoms would I pick up again if I had the time? Huh... I don't honestly know. I've never been all that deep into fanfic or re-creationist costuming. I've always wanted to start from scratch, or perhaps be inspired by some other art form like the costumes dpaxson and lferion made for us inspired by the Curse of Chalion books by Bujold.

I suppose in the very general sense I'm still primarily a Fantasy fan, as opposed to a Sci Fi, Horror, or other genre fan. But I don't tend to get really intensely fanatical about the specifics if I don't have a personal connection to the creators. I suppose I was about as thoroughly a Buffy fan as I ever was of anything, and when I was younger I was a ST:TNG fan specifically. I am definitely enjoying the Harry Potter and Narnia movies, enough to make damned sure I catch them in the theater anyway, which is saying a lot for me. But none of these define me socially, I don't think - I don't consider myself a part of a group that is distinct to that fandom, as opposed to Sci-Fi/Fantasy fandom in general.

I do wish I had more time and energy and money to be active in Alexander fandom again, and I am still inclined to squee and run for the nearest bookstore whenever anything by Neil Gaiman or Brian and Wendy Froud becomes available. I still keep track of Stephanie Law's work as best as I can. I'm hoping I'll soon have the time to read seanan_mcguire's urban fantasy Toby Daye series, and I did buy the first book in her zombie politics series Feed (under "Mira Grant") out of loyalty, despite it not being something I can safely read if I want to sleep at all.

I definitely want to go to the new Faerie conventions and festivals, which it occurs to me all of those would fit into, actually, and I lament that I no longer have the energy to be enthusiastic about Ren Faire and the Pirate festival, although I don't think I'll ever get really into Dickens, and compared to how deeply other folks get into Faires in general, I've never really been that into it (even when I have wanted to be).

4. Name a book that changed your life.
I really need to ponder this. The way I function, books don't change my life in the sense that you're implying. There are some books that were highly formative for me, and books that are very important to me, but I don't look back and think "I would have gone in a different direction entirely had this book not steered me in this direction instead." I feel like my life overall has actually had a pretty solid theme all along, and the events that were distinct turning points have all been direct experiences.

5. What brings you joy in life?
Creation. I do love making things with my hands, but it's actually making things with my mind and my heart that really gets me. Creating models of reality, creating ideas, creating connections with other beings, creating and re-creating aspects of myself, creating symbolic languages.... And then, yeah, any or all of these things may be joyfully expressed by crafting some object or other, and that is yet another layer of joy in creation.
