DR. HOWARD "HOWIE" FRANKLIN (ROSENBLATT) MARTIN Born March 10, 1928 in San Francisco, a third-generation San Francisco native, died peacefully at home after a long illness on September 4. Dr. Martin was the first facial plastic surgeon to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He taught at the Stanford Medical School and the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto for more than 40 years, and was a member of numerous medical groups and societies.
He graduated from George Washington High in San Francisco in 1945, and received a B.A. in pre-med and music from Stanford in 1948, where he was the leader of the Marching Band and a Big Band. He completed medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, MO in 1954, interned at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, and subsequently completed residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy as a doctor and attained the rank of Commander. In 1960 he moved to Mountain View and worked at Stanford Hospital until El Camino Hospital opened. He was the first ENT/Facial Plastic Surgeon at El Camino Hospital, and worked there until he retired in December 2002.
A member of the Los Altos United Methodist Church since 1968, he sang in the Morning Glory Choir and was an occasional soloist. An accomplished trombone and piano player, painter, ceramicist, and gardener, he was known for his enthusiasm for life.
Dr. Martin leaves behind Emily Martin, wife of 33 years, two adult children from his first marriage (son David Martin and daughter Edie Bazjanac), and brother John Martin. He also leaves three adult stepchildren from his second marriage (Scott Parcel, Wendy Morelli and Jan Parcel), 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, September 14 at 4:30 P.M. at the Los Altos United Methodist Church (Foothill Expressway at Magdalena). In lieu of flowers donations in his name can be made to
Habitat For Humanity, or to the
Music Department at the
Los Altos United Methodist Church.
