getting things done

23/52 tried
Originally uploaded by embem30. Another week is past, and I only have one more until camp starts for the summer. Happily, I got a lot done this week to prepare for the wedding.

Steve brought my engagement ring home from the jeweler on Monday evening. They had polished it, so it's all extra sparkly and new again. My wedding band should be done sometime this week, and I'm excited to see it.

Tuesday was my hair and makeup trial in the little town of Ross, CA. Alyson came with me, and it was good to have another opinion on things. When we got to the salon, we found out that they had me booked for July 10 instead of June 10. Luckily, Erica, the girl who was going to do my hair had stuck around and kept her schedule open, so she did it then anyway. Of course, she had no hair fillers, so my hair got wrapped around a yellow dish sponge thing that she used for practice.

I brought in some pictures, mostly of a Reese Witherspoon hairdo from some award show a couple years ago. I wanted something somewhat simple and classic, and also fresh and summery, but with some sort of interesting twist to it. I liked what Erica did, although we quickly figured out that my hair would need to be dirtier to stay in place. She also decided that she'd use a smaller curling iron next time so that the top part of my hair would have some wave in it.

The makeup person wasn't there, but Erica did an application herself and wrote down the colors she had used. Again, we went for somewhat simple. As I had read somewhere, Erica said it was best to bring my own mascara. Of course, I had forgotten to take it with me, so I went without it until I got home. When she first put the mirror in front of me, my main thought was, "eek, needs mascara." And indeed, the whole look came together much better once I put some on.

After we left the salon, Alyson and I drove back into the city and stopped in Laurel Heights at The Ribbonerie. I needed - what else? - a ribbon or two. The main thing I need a nice ribbon for was as a sash to go with my wedding dress. We found a nice peachy pink one that was about the right width, as well as one that was even wider. I decided to get both to try with the dress. Then, I looked for some thinner stuff to tie around favor boxes. Deciding on a slightly peachier one, the lady there helped us figure out how many yards I would need. It was a lot more than I would have guessed. She was quite helpful. In the end, I walked out of there with $75 worth of ribbon. Cheaper than buying an actual sash, at least. More colors to choose from too.

Since my hair and makeup was all pretty-like still, Steve and I went out for dinner that evening. (I took pictures of myself before he got home.) We decided that we would try Beretta, a restaurant in the neighborhood that used to be Last Supper Club, still owned my the same people. We ended up liking it better than Last Supper Club, although I missed the strawberry mojitos. The glass of rosé that I got was really good, though. Steve and I shared three small dishes: an eggplant appetizer with buffalo mozzarella, a thin crust pizza with broccolini and pancetta, and the squid ink risotto with calamari. The food wasn't completely perfect, but it was very good. You can see pictures on Flickr.

Thursday, I had my second dress fitting. And it fits now! You may recall that I got my dress from Glamour Closet, which sells discounted designer dresses. Mine was a size 10 - they run small - so it was a little on the big side. After a month at the alterations place that Glamour Closet recommended, it is now the right size. I also tried the sash that I had gotten on Tuesday, and it works nicely. Now, they just have to do a couple finishing touches and steam it, and I'll pick it up on August 12.

The invitations are ready to go out in the mail on Monday too. When I first looked at stamps online after the postage rate went up, I was a little miffed to find out that my choices were ugly liberty bells, flags, or use two stamps that don't match. Fortunately, I checked again last Monday and saw that the new 42-cent stamps would be on sale starting on Tuesday. They had the wedding hearts again, and they were even my colors! I only needed the green 42-cent ones, but I was amused to see that the higher value ones (for heavier envelopes) were peach.

And that's about it for last week.
