I fear for the future of America. People who have no business being in college are there, after getting a 4.0 high school GPA just by showing up to class. Once they get here, they're succeeding because they can lie and cheat their way through classes. In the past couple of weeks, I've caught at least 3 instances of academic integrity violations among my students, one of which was just a lucky catch after I was asked to grade another section's papers because that section's TA was out of town and I found his code to be identical to that of one of my students' code. I've probably missed a few cases too.
Just today, in one of my classes, I saw a guy sitting a couple of rows in front of me, on his laptop, copying and pasting a play review, changing a few words, and then making a few generic remarks on the play at the end, no doubt to pass off as his own review of the play after not going to see the play himself. It wasn't for the class that we were in, but it was still disturbing to me that people can steal the work of others and get an unearned grade without even thinking about what they're doing. It's unfair to those who did the work that is being stolen, and it's unfair to anyone who earned their grade, whether it's a good or a bad grade.
