My first days...

Aug 26, 2005 19:02

Well. I am officially a grad student, and so far, being a grad student ain't so bad. Wednesday I didn't have to go to class until 12:20, and that class was Concert Choir. Concert Choir is about the same size as Mercer Singers was, but the sound was actually much better. I really had to jump back to being a musician really quickly. Despite the fact that I need to work on my sight reading, I'm gonna like being in choir again. The lit that we're doing so far is good: Hark I hear the harp's eternal, the Morning Trumpet, and There will be rest. All great pieces. I'm super amped about Christmas. We're doing the Rutter Gloria, the Bass Gloria and Feast of Carols, plus one other piece. That's like a dream Christmas program. I could die happy after that!

After concert choir I sat around for a while until choral lit. We discussed the mass...lots of fun. The guidonian hand did get mentioned. Yes! WORD UP GUIDO! After that I was pretty much done for the day.

Tuesday was an early morning because I have theory review at 8:10. We learned how to identify intervals in class yesterday. Oh my...this could be a long semester. I'm slightly concerned that we're not going to get to the things that I actually need to learn, like how to resolve Augmented 6ths (thanks again Jean for teaching me NOTHING!). The one upside to theory review is that I don't have to buy a new book. He's using the same book I used for form and analysis at Mercer, so that's money I don't have to spend. Mentioning Mercer, Dr. Brock (the organ teacher) is friends with Dr. Parris, but he is sooo much cooler...and by cooler I mean he doesn't have a monk hair cut and doesn't hike up his pants so you can see his hideous leg hair and he doesn't accentuate his crotch.

After that I had another long break, so I hopped on over to A&A to grab a bagel and a coke. I then sat outside the music building and talked to Melanie on the phone. I miss my Mercer friends! After that I trucked back into the MUB to go to Music Bibliography. I managed to completely glaze over within the first five minutes of class. That's always positive...I really need to be day dreaming on the first day of class. I'm actually gonna have to start bringing my laptop to class when we meet in the library. That means old bastard actually needs to function (sidenote: my computer is now known as bastard. make note of that.)

Following music bib. I went home and grabbed some lunch and ordered books online. I talked to mom and had the weirdest conversation ever. I was really uncomfortable talking to her, but I don't really know why. After my short break I hitailed it back to campus for chamber singers. More awesome lit! TWO(!!!) Moses Hogan pieces, another spiritual, a song that talks about "Hoe cakes," and some serious lamenting (Job: The Oratorio). I'm way excited. Rehearsal was good, but I acidentally dashed out without buying my choral lit book from Stuts. because I needed to get out to Turkey Creek in 15 minutes.

The reason I went to Turkey Creek was to eat at Steak n' Shake and see a FREE showing of The Brothers Grimm. It was a good movie and I enjoyed the scenery (aka Matt Damon and Heath Ledger...yum.) I enjoyed being able to go out since I didn't have to go to class today. That won't normally happen, but choral lab doesn't start meeting until Sept. 9th. I did go on campus however to meet my voice teacher Ms. Disimone. She spent the last 8 years singing opera in Germany, so I really gotta get back on my game!

Well, that's about all for now. I'll be back hopefully sooner rather than later!
