Ok, it's not winter yet, but everyone's predicting an early winter. I mean, Calgary had it's shortest patio season ever. Custer state park had 7 inches of snow the other day. We had a week of barely 60 degree weather and everyone's ready to cry that the sky is falling. I'm just enjoying the weather now. I'm not looking forward to the snow. At least I bought a winter coat early enough, but now I'm broke, so that didn't work out for me!
Hopefully I'll have next week off from work. I have to baby sit while my parents do a weird car tour of route 66 w Dale and Cindy. They're driving a classic car, and Dale and Cindy will be cruising in their motor home. Um, kay. Mom's not thrilled, but she seems to have less say in things like that anymore. If my dad wants to do a car show or tour or visit someone every weekend, that's ok. But if mum wants to go camping or take a minibreak to South Dakota, then suddenly there's stuff to do on the farm that's more important. Not a very nice marriage these days it seems to be. And I wonder why I haven't married yet...or even really want to anyway. Very few good examples these days of good marriages.
Anyway, while I'm home, hopefully I can keep up job searching. Seriously, I've had nothing all summer. You'd have though something would have bit by now. I must just have a crummy resume. I know what it is - I need to actually move cities. I just hate moving and moving to a new city is really hard to do. I'd rather have a job waiting for me in a new city anyway. Plus, my lease doesn't end till spring. I have no car so driving anywhere is a no-no. Guess that just makes things even harder. What is new, ya?
Books I've been reading:
Am really into the Swedish detective series by Sjowall and Wahloo. The police force is more of a farce in early '70's - meaning the politicians are mucking things up again. The detectives are actually pretty neat characters, and the mysteries themselves are clever. You keep guessing who the baddie is. I've only read three or so and the baddie turns out to be someone unbalanced and when confronted, drops dead soon after. Still, good reads.
Also a fan of the John Dortmunder books by Donald E. Westlake. They're not really mysteries, more to-catch-a-thief type stories. The thieves are a funny bunch and work best when they're trying to screw over a baddie (like What's the Worst that Could Happen? - loved that one). John doesn't always get the stuff he scores for (really through no fault of his own most of the time) but it's a hell of good ride anyway.
