new obsessions...

Started reading THE THORN BIRDS and then decided to watch the miniseries. OMG, I can see why it was such a winner back in the day! It's got it all: epic, love story, historical, many characters, death by wild boar, fire. It's great! I'm not a huge Richard Chamberlain fan, but he really won me over here. Loved Rachel Ward as well - she really did have the vunerable quality of Meggie down. She had it the worst tho, she fell in love with a priest who wouldn't give up his dream of becoming cardinal for her. Even when she tried to love someone else, the guy was a creep and all she wanted was her priest. Ralph and Meggie could connect only a few times (with some wicked hot love scenes that are actually tame, but were probably scandalous at the time - 1983) and I felt for them. I'm a sucker for thwarted love stories (see "Parade's End", "North and South", "Little Dorrit", "Pride and Prejudice", etc). Anyway, I cried like a baby at the end when Ralph dies in Meggies arms, a cardinal finally, but still wanting to spend his life with her. Such a great sudsy love story!

Just watched "Time of the Doctor" and HATED IT. Not what I thought at all - previews were a bit misleading, making us assume all his villians were coming back to kill the Doctor. In a way it was true, but not like I thought it would work. Plus, they drew it out way too long - not as annoyingly bad as "End of time", but close. I felt for Clara, constantly jetted back to Earth and then back again every few hundred years to what- cheer him up?! Bollocks. Much better regeneration stories were "Caves of Androzoni", "Logopolis", "Parting of the Ways" and even "Planet of the Spiders", "War Games" and "the tenth planet". Back when they didn't make SUCH a big deal about the Doctor dying. Give me "the day of the doctor" over this, when that story had huge flaws as well.

Hopefully, next season will be a good one with Peter Capaldi as Twelve (and yes, that's what I'm going to call the Doctor no matter how many new regenerations he gets handed to him. The War Doctor does not count).
