EmaKate looked around the room that was now her home. The trip to Italy was a needed time for her to gain a few days of peace. Something rare and tangible in the life of a Slayer. Well a working Slayer. The kids at the Academies and complexes of the world didn't always go right now into the fray. They were schooled and shoved facts down their throats that in the end didn't mean shit. The training really was the only thing that mattered. Cold, hard workouts that would leave the average person gasping for air as their muscles screamed out. Knowing what type of goo a demon sprewed out in the heat of the battle, while interesting really wasn't that important. You avoided such things and survived. Knowing how to use a stake and a crossbow would save a Slayer's life quicker than the facts of demon spawn. It amazed her there was a time when only one girl was expected to save the world. Amazed her in the fact that a) the world still rotated and b) one girl did it. Alone. But the truth was they really were still alone. While they worked in teams when in battle it was a girl vs. a demon or two. The one that walked away won.

It was an imperfect balance. And now the power was so divided she wondered if they were really as strong as the one Slayer that had stood before them. They were Chosen for something that was beyond their control.

Control. That was a word Ema knew well. She had always wanted it and it never seemed to be within her grasp. The men that she had serviced before becoming a Slayer had it. The doctors and lawyers who wanted a pretty girl rubbing their backs. Wood had it. He showed her how small she really was. Now it seemed JC had it. Glancing at the small wrapped box on her night stand she smiled.

He may have it now. But in the end she was a Slayer. And when a Slayer walked into battle they shone. She was walking into this battle with a renewed spirit. He may not look like the demons she fought and dusted on a nightly basis but he was the same. Part of a parasite of evil. And a Slayer fought evil. Plain and simple. The only difference, this time she had to use more brains than brawn.

She was up for the challenge.
