Read more... )

sorry, me again :) as a teacher i can tell you that there is no one single image of an educator. one has to develop his/her own style and voice. that can only come with experience and through training.

in this particular case, it's called using realia in class. for example, when i teach body parts i always get my students to shed clothes (pushing the limits of propriety or appropriacy, as they say at cambridge) and touch themselves and each other as much as socially accepted. first of all, it's fun and interactive, and secondly, it's an attempt at engaging as many senses as possible which allows for more opportunities for the information to stick. it's a variation on what's called kinesthetic learning.

btw, yes, the girl in the picture is right out of a wet dream of a perfectly normal and healthy (sic) teenage boy.

I teach English to adults (well, I do actually have an eight-year-old, but that's an exception). General and business. Lots of Cambridge certificate prep courses. Body parts are taught to students of all ages, to young learners usually through song.

it's also usually a good idea to personalize the material so it hits close to home for people. in other words, you're your own best prop. get them to think about themselves, and most of the time they'll be more motivated. though i'm not sure this really applies to your subject matter.

well, in that case, here's the last pearl of wisdom for today: try to tell them as little as possible. ask questions, get them to think and speak.

there most likely are communities like that already. here are the ones i'm a member of, but these are eng.-related: teachabroad, tefl, tesol_forum. you might need something broader. if you end up starting one, let me know.
