greetings from hurricane central.
so, i live on the west bank of the Mississippi River. It's one of the highest places in the area. Our neighborhood was the first place settled after the French Quarter. It is not in the actual city.
In this storm, which Mayor Nagin just got done calling the mother of all hurricanes or something like that, the West Bank is the most vulnerable place. Apparently we can expect storm surge 9-13 feet.... scary.
so while the storm is going west of us, the worst effects other than where it hits occur to the east. we're now moving everything of value upstairs. tony is moving for the second time this week since he switched rooms with emily last weekend. as long as jackie (my car) doesn't fail me, i should be fine. baton rouge will still suffer from strong storms and possible flooding but apparently my cousins' house is in one of the highest parts of the city. and now you all can listen to "callin baton rouge" by garth brooks and think of me, should that randomly strike your fancy.
tomorrow we report to the Preservation Resource Center to volunteer with the evacuation at 5:15 am. Then we're heading out after our shift is over. (we have no idea how long it is. we should be out by tomorrow night....)
see you on the other side.
