Rebuilding Together (New Orleans) works under the larger umbrella organization of the Preservation Resource Center. I really like both and the Preservation Resource Center is really cool because they try to save all the old, historic buildings in New Orleans from being demoed by the city (which I think they like to do a lot, especially post-Katrina). I think the demo is really sad because what makes New Orleans so unique at first glance is the unique architecture of the city and the fact that so many of the buildings are over 100 years old. For instance, my house was built around the 1870s or at least that's the word on the street. Judging from the dates on other people's houses, it doesn't sound too off. Also, it's much more environmentally friendly to renovate an old building than to build one starting from scratch. It's one of the things that is really starting to bother me about Extreme Makeover Home Edition, especially when the house is just too small. I know that would take more time but it still pains my soul. Anyway, so the PRC has this monthly newspaper/journal thing and the lady in charge of it finally emailed me back about contributing articles to it. I don't have an assignment yet but she's going to get back to me. And it's great because I'll get to continue exercising my writing skills AND I'll get to learn more about the city. Win-win. Hoorah!
