Let's talk, .hack

We've known each other a pretty long time, haven't we? After all, you were the reason I bought a PS2, you got me into anime, and I fell head over heels in love with your mythology and world building - especially considering its all just for a fake MMO. Now, before you get offended and just so we're clear, anything I say has nothing at all to do ( Read more... )

somebody shut me up, jrpg lectures, dothack

That icon is mesmerizing

At least we both can say we liked .hack before it was bad?

The dothack Wiki just says "Hermit: A strange character with an illegal appearance" but yeah, it does look like Mia. Which makes another character design they've recycled.

But wait, what's this about reversing everyone's plot? Is //Link a giant retcon or something?

True, true...and so at that point its not even a suspenseful story point when that cat turns out to be an evil AI. Fans of the originals will probably go "Oh hey, remember how much cooler/sadder it was with Maha and Mia?", and newcomers might be super confused, unless the new anime's supposed to be a reboot or something?

And gah. GAH. WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS SERIES.

These are pretty much my thoughts exactly, but I feel like I can't say much at the same time 'cause I haven't played //LINK or know enough about it to say anything. :/

Oh, the Xth forms are pretty amusing. I wonder what the designers were thinking. Have you seen Silabus'? He looks like an adorable pirate, LOL ♥

I haven't played //Link either, so there's still the chance that it'll surprise me. But you know how the saying goes - "If it looks like a duck..."

Regardless of how adorable Silabus and that hat are, there's no excuse for Mistral or ENDRANCE

This is why I stopped with the series after SIGN and the original four-game series. I tried to get into GU but never did. (Though I really like Haseo. >>> Maybe I will at some point?)

Damn, now I really want to rewatch SIGN.

Oh, I guess technically Legend of the Twilight as well. I actually really liked the manga and anime adaptations of that part. ^^;

Legend of the Twilight was cute, I'll admit that, but in a sort of light breather between the emotionally draining end of the first four games and the beginning of the //GU arc. And now they keep trying to say its canonical.

The //GU games are pretty great! They do a lot at making The World feel like an MMO in its own right, with little encyclopedia entries off to the side that sort of explain the events of the first four games in a mythical sense, and really, really good characters - Haseo and Atoli remind me a lot of Squall and Rinoa, and neat clues as to who's player was who in the original games. It does a good job of being a sequel that builds on the original rather than treading the same ground.

/hugs SIGN boxset.

Maybe I'll invest in them when I'm back in the states next year then. Thanks!

SIGN was the first anime I ever bought, so I have all the single discs.
