I thought it was actually a very good episode. I had stopped caring about where they were taking the storylines and how they were going to tie it all up, (which I'm glad about cause they didn't really do any of it convincingly - or at all) and instead could enjoy things such as supersmart!Panda and dancing!Cook and JJ and brb - running to Harvard!Thomo. Karen was also pretty good and Naomi was funny before she took on Freddie's spirit and became a pothead.
Sheesh. The Naomi speech was cheesy as hell (worse than Emily's Love Ball one) and really didn't work for me. For her character to burst through the door and say such emotional things in front of everyone? Nah.
I thought the point of her S3 storyline was that she realised these feelings for Emily over the course of the first half of the season, and then spent the next half dealing with how she was going to come out. Not that she was already in love with Emily but that she should keep it a secret because the little stalker girl that loves her might find out that Naomi loves her back and then they might actually both get what they want (that's a bit harsh, but you get my meaning). But I do agree that they had to do something with that arc because although that was contrived, can you imagine how bad it would have been if they had just left as was? So on the one hand, at least they did something about it, but on the other, the nothingness was stretched out at least three eps too long and the fixing should have been far better paced throughout rather than a quick, 'I'd die for you - look Goa!' 'Oh, in that case you're forgiven'.
Ha, the one thing that I liked about the Naomi speech scene was the song :P
I guess I liked the Naomi speech for exactly the reasons you liked the other stuff (most of which I agree with) - since this is no way ties up with S3, and doesn't make any sense, I may as well enjoy it as much as I can within it's own context. And given how Naomi's been acting this series, the speech wasn't all that out of place, so it worked for me. I should be angry, cos as you say she's acting nothing like Naomi actually would, but I've grown immune to it by now. SO I could just enjoy the sweetness and go "awww!"
My main issue is with this as the finale. Apart from deadFreds I think this would have worked great as episode 6. Like, for Naomily, you get the revelation in 2, we see it's still shit in 4 and then Naomi tries to explain in 6. Then we could have had Emily accepting her back for the last two eps, so that even if it was cheesy it wouldn't have been rushed. And for the others ... everything would be better if this stuff had happened earlier, IMO. Everything would just be more developed, and then we could ahve had a proper resolution at the end.
Yeah, I suppose that the only thing I still care about is Naomi and so she was great for a lot of this ep cause I think finally she was written properly, but not so great at the speech.
I agree with your comment about pacing. Lots of things could have been improved by fixing that. But hey, it's done now, so. I guess it's up to fandom to make it all better!
Yeah, and there were enough good moments in it that we can use to shape how we remember the characters, even if we forget the evenets themselves.
I'm thinking like Naomi's tendancy to get wasted when she's upset, instead of just turning inwards, or the naked t-shirt cuddling bit. So I'll ignore the actual S4, but will use those bits to look at S3 and AU versions of them differently.
Yeah I have a couple. One's sitting on the back burner at the mo (The Bends one), and the other I'm plodding on manfully with. It's probably not got much more to go actually, but I've not done any proofing on it yet, so you never know!
Everything's on hold while I go through the joy of finding a flat. Sucks ass.
Maybe get something up and running over Easter, if not then May it will be. Actually, I'm helping lazarus_girl with a Being Human/Skins crossover at the moment, if you can count that.
