An Open Letter to the PTC

Dear PTC,

I find your repetitive and closed-minded arguments tiresome. Hey! Maybe if I shout loud enough and complain to the Government, they'll shut you down.

Seriously. Seeing a "bare ass" shot (from an actor aged 17 or otherwise) is not pornography. I don't know what turns you on, but for me, a shot of an ass in a non-sexualised scene doesn't do it.

I'm afraid to say you've completely missed the point of the show if this is how you feel. Oh, wait, that's probably because you didn't see any of the programme before you judged it. Way to teach your kids a good lesson there. The core of Skins is the relationships and interactions that teenagers have with those around them. It happens to be set in their reality, not the reality that you may wish them to live in. Yes, this is often heightened to create a drama worth watching, but the base line holds true. For many teenagers drugs are available. Drink is available. Sex is available. That isn't to say that every single teenager is out there doing this stuff (and nor does it mean they'll start simply because they've seen it on the television, please credit your teenagers with a little more sense of self). If parents would rather be blinkered about it, then that is up to them, however it is not good parenting to simply pretend that it's not happening, and to say otherwise is incredibly naïve.

And hey, ultimately, if you don't agree with it and don't want to watch it, then don't. Last I checked there was no law against switching over. If you can't trust your kids to do what you ask by turning the channel, or you aren't able to have a mature two-way discussion about the themes of the show with them, then doesn't that say more about your relationship with your child than the television programme in question? And, somewhat ironically, that's the sort of relationship that the show occasionally portrays.

Very little love,
Em (who happens to be a well adjusted adult with no drink/drug problems, all at the same time as liking the TV show Skins -- miraculous.)

today i feel preachy, us skins
