‘Can we go somewhere?’ Emily asks her one day, over the phone.
Naomi smiles faintly at the familiar words, ‘Where?’
‘Anywhere.’ Comes Emily’s response, just like it was Naomi’s all that time ago.
---
They go to the beach.
The further away from Bristol they get, the greater the weight that is lifted from them. Emily relaxes visibly as soon as they get on the train.
‘I just needed to get away, you know. From mum and Katie. I just want some space for a bit.’
Naomi knows; she squeezes Emily’s hand. ‘It’s ok.’ She reassures Emily, ‘It’s fine.’
---
Naomi can’t see Emily’s face from where she’s lying: flat on her back on the blanket they brought; with Emily resting her head on Naomi’s lap, absentmindedly running her fingers over Naomi’s ankle.
‘I’m telling you Ems; the whole thing is corrupt. Murdoch owns, like, all of these newspapers, yeah? So he spins the stories, he tells people who to vote for. No one in government has the balls to tell him what to do, so he just doesn’t pay his taxes. He owes hundreds of millions of pounds.’ She exhales smoke up towards the sun. ‘Do you know what could be done with that money?’
Naomi can feel Emily shake her head slightly. Naomi lifts her head, sees Emily has her eyes closed, a smile playing on her lips. Naomi loves this. Loves that she can make things better for Emily just by being herself.
‘Spliff?’
Emily hums in assent; lets Naomi place the joint between her lips.
Naomi runs a hand through Emily’s hair. ‘Let’s stay here tonight,’ she says, because it feels right. ‘We can get a room in a B&B, have fish and chips for dinner.’
Emily doesn’t answer; just shifts up and kisses her.
Naomi will take that as a yes.
---
When they make it up to their room after eating, Emily presses her up against the wall. Naomi can taste the vinegar on Emily’s lips.
‘I love you,’ Emily whispers against Naomi’s collarbone as she’s working the buttons on Naomi’s top. Naomi knows, of course she knows, but it still catches her by surprise when Emily reminds her.
Tilting Emily’s chin upwards, she kisses her. ‘I love you too,’ she says, slightly breathlessly. Emily’s smile in return makes Naomi’s heart constrict.
When Emily has rid them both of their clothes, she takes Naomi by the hand and leads her to the bed.
She spends what could be hours just kissing Naomi everywhere, until Naomi lets out a strangled, ‘Em -’ and she finally relents, moves her fingers just so and has Naomi shaking on the bed.
---
Naomi wakes to a splay of red hair. She pulls Emily closer to her, kisses her on the shoulder.
‘Morning,’ she says, in response to Emily’s groan, kisses her on the shoulder again.
Emily twists in Naomi’s arms; turns to face her with big, brown eyes.
‘I don’t want to go home.’
‘We can come back,’ Naomi states. She knows it’s not the same, but it’s all they have right now.
‘Anyway,’ she continues, running her hands down Emily’s back, ‘we don’t have to check out for another hour.’
