Giving up collections?

I need some serious advice from fellow collectors...

I just came back from Japan, and I am sorry I have not been on LJ at all! ;__; there was just too much stuff going on...
But now that I have time to think, and my head is clear... I've started to think while looking at my collections, "what IS all this stuff?" If you don't know already, all of ( Read more... )

HAI EM! welcome back. 1st, change is never easy, but it can be liberating. I've sold portions of my collection over time though I admit I've never had one that was really all that large, because of the reasons you said, I start to feel like I'm hoarding ( ... )

yeah, shipping from Canada is KILLER! DX That's just one of many issues about selling on ebay.. I'm also worried that there are bad buyers out there that will lie about receiving items, and so on ( ... )

The best advice I have been given is, don't sell those items you are thinking of getting rid of right away. Pack them up for the time being, out of sight out of mind. Give it a couple weeks or a month and if you find that you don't miss the items, sell them.

If you do decide to sell your stuff, there is the community and eBay. I'm impatient, so I find it easier to throw stuff in a lot on eBay that I want to get rid of. Always watch your starting price, unless it is a hot item that you know will get a bid war going.

I love BJD, especially the cat one...but can't afford them. That is why I bought Cathrine DeMew from Monster High, she is the next best thing.

Welcome back btw...;)

Yes, that is smart thinking! I think I was just caught up in a lot of frustration, and went a little nuts thinking I had to sell almost everything. I don't actually have to, or even want to. I will pack up some of the things I don't think I will miss and wait it out. If it turns out that I'm fine without them, then I will slowly sell them!

ooh, I remember your Monster High doll! She is really cute! I'm finding myself more and more into dolls as of late.. I'm not sure why? I like buying miniature clothes and creating outfits.... people must think I'm nuts, lol. I don't care for what others think though, so more for me!

It's good to be back :D I'm avoiding the community right now, but I will try to keep up with LJ at least!!

I have often done the same thing after returning from a trip. Sounds like a good plan...;)

Dolls are way more awesome then they use to be. I had a field day finding things for Catrine to wear. Etsy has a pretty good selection of hand made doll clothes. If I had the money, I'd buy Catrine more outfits. All in all I'm pretty happy with what I picked out for her.

I don't blame you, I should avoid the community too. Luckily, I'm not interested in the majority of the newly released items. Just Mega Lucario and Espurr...:3

Ooooh, I'm glad to know you're back, お帰りエミリーちゃん ! I hope you had fun and will post at leact one little entry about the major things you did there.
And show us you new baby~ ♥ !

I know what you mean by wanting to sell things you used to collect. Sometimes,
If there's any Mew/Giratina plushies you don't want anymore and that aren't *too* expensive, maybe I could take one or two ?
And the derpy Pokémon too !! I'm into that stuff (*w*).

I'm happy for you to see you have projects now !

oooo I will! I didn't take a lot of photos, to be honest, but I will think of what to post about. I think the most photos I have are of the sakura or maid cafe?! XD;

If I have any small things I can just give them to you :P

I have definitely been where you are - with a lot of "stuff" and a big credit card bill to pay.
I was hesitant to downsize my collection at first too, but after I did, I felt very relieved, I paid off my credit card bill and still had some extra money, and it was a huge weight off of my chest. I was able to make enough room to display the things that I did keep all in one area and nicely so that everything can be seen well. It also helped me to slow down on collecting, I hardly buy anything anymore and can focus on other things.
In my experience, I found it to be a really good thing and I think if you're feeling like you should get rid of some things, do it! There are some things that you do lose money on, but other things that have gone up in price and are pretty sought after (i.e. couplechus). I would maybe auction a lot of things off/try to sell them directly on the comm and the things that don't sell, put it in a huge lot on eBay. :)
Best of luck! Hoping to see some pictures from your trip to Japan soon~! :3

To be honest, parting with the things isn't the hard part for me, it's the process of selling. I really hate organizing sales... it's mortifying! DX I think it will be for the best though... like you said, it will be a huge weight off my shoulders, and the extra money can go towardss travels/ tuition. Right now, I just need to decide what exactly I want to keep, and what I want gone :S

I didn't take too many pictures, but I will post what I have! (ノ´▽`)ノ

When me and my parents decided to redo my room, I realized only then as well how much stuff I have...so I have done A LOT of collection weeding and it definitely helped me getting rid of a lot of stuff and only keep the things I really really wanted! (though I didn't have any financial troubles)

I think that the best would be indeed going through all your stuff and think what you truly want to keep and what not. Remember that if you sell them to the community, then all of the stuff you sell will go to lovely homes that will cherish them.
My advice would be first offering your stuff one by one to get as much money as possible, and the stuff that doesn't sell you can put in lots and try to sell them on eBay! It's all up to you, but if you want to pay the bill, then I think that it would be best to go this way! :)

I wish you good luck in that <3

I think I remember you telling me before that you like selling, right? I honestly DREAD it! I hate making sales posts and going through comments, taking pictures, packing, etc. I hate the whole process DX much more so than actually parting with the stuff!

But yea, I am not going to rush this. I am going to take my time and think this through. I am not letting go of any of my major collections anyways, so I don't know why I'm so frustrated! arg!

True, I absolutely enjoy it and wish this would be my job X'D
Man, if I would live in your area, I would gladly do the sales for you X'D

Of course, this is what I did as well! I could never let go of my major collections, I have worked so hard for them at work and doing sales, so they mean a world to me. I only got rid of the ones that I didn't feel like I would miss them...
