Some locavore fail

Jan 26, 2010 08:04

My intent was to start the all local cooking week yesterday, but I ran into a couple of snags.

1)  Sophie had an early morning doctor's appointment, so I was not able to make our first local meal for breakfast.
2)  Our crock pot appears to have largely expired.  When set on high it seems to heat to low, and when set to low it doesn't really heat at all.  Probably one of the heating elements is dead.  Given that the crock pot is from the early 70's (and is a truly hideous international orange color) the loss will not be greatly mourned after a replacement is found, but it did really screw up the timing of yesterday's local pot roast to the extent that we had to go out for dinner or miss our evening game.
3)  We have a few non-local vegetables in the house that need to be eaten before they go bad.

Consequently, I decided that local food week will start today, not yesterday.  Things started off this morning with a skillet fry made with local potatoes, ground beef, & cheese.  I used some non-local mushrooms that needed to be consumed, and seasoned the whole thing with salt, pepper, and green chili sauce.

Pretty tasty, even if ground beef is not my preferred breakfast meat.

Lunch will be potato-leek-cabbage soup & toasted cheese on local bread (we have a few slices we need to eat - then I will make some bread of my own).

Dinner will be the aforementioned pot roast with carrots & potatoes.
