Time for another local food week!

Next week I am going to get into local foods again, but this time with a twist I have so far feared to take.

Starting next Monday, for an entire week, EVERYTHING I serve for the entire week will be locally made.  That's right, everything.

This has a few implications

1)  No coffee.  Probably no tea either unless we want to drink that stuff that supposedly cures menstrual cramps.  No soda either, of course.  At the moment I have no idea whatsoever that I will be able to serve other than water.

2)  Probably no bread.  Or rice.  Potatoes are going to be the thing that week.  While wheat has historically been grown here, it sure isn't growing here now.  I may make an exception for bread I make myself - primarily because I like making bread and haven't done so in awhile.

3)  Local vegetables.  A quick check at the co-op this morning revealed rutabaga, parsnips, beets, carrots, and chard as the primary contenders in that department, though I think we recently had turnips as well.  Same goes for fruit, though I can make use of the fruit I have canned in the garage.

4)  Local meats.  That means mostly beef and fish.  Some lamb if I get lucky.

As always I will make an exception for salt.  We need it, and without a canoe or a boat or something it would be really hard to procure it locally.  My other exceptions are

a)  We get to eat out at a local restaurant - once during the week.  It can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
b)  mechanteanemone  is getting back into cooking (and made a fine brisket last night I might add) and she isn't bound by my silly rules in what she makes.

I forsee a lot of dishes seasoned with Weitchpec chili sauce of one variety or another.  I also forsee that I will need to do a lot of planning in order to pull this off.  So tomorrow - I begin the process of planning.

local food, locavore, food
