Plus, I understand that decisions made in Dragon Age can be imported into the sequel.
But just remember - in Dragon Age, you're kind of playing toward the final battle. Figure out who you want to bring in - generally a healer, two fighters (including Alistair), and a rogue or combat mage. Build them with that in mind, knowing that only Oghren and your hero have to care about what comes after.
Advice for your fighter: pick one weapon path and stick with it.
Advice for the wizard: get the Spell Might+Blizzard+Tempest spells early on. Activate spell might, cast blizzard, and cast tempest in the same general area (doesn't have to be precise). This produces the most powerful spell in the game, which does massive electrical damage to all enemies over a period of a few minutes in a given area, effectively eliminating all mooks and even some elites.
It can be cast through doors, on enemies who haven't noticed you, eliminating them before battle even begins. It can also target the Archdemon when he's out of range.
(Its one disadvantage is that it also hits non-party allies, and depending on your difficulty level, can hit allies for small amounts of damage.)
