They immediately started house shopping when Margaret announced to him that she was expecting. They needed a house now and not the cute one bedroom apartment they had lived in for two years. They needed a home to call their own.

It took them some time to find the perfect home but when they saw the Craftsman it took only minutes for Alan and Margaret to know it was their home.

Margaret was almost eight months pregnant the day they moved into their home. A group of their friends helped them move in with a promise of some beers and sandwiches. Alan on more than one occasion had to take a box out of Margaret’s hands, reminding her to take it easy.

Their first night in the place, they lay in bed, Margaret taking Alan’s hand to lie on her belly where the baby was kicking. Every time they did this it made Alan giddy and scared. He hadn’t been around that many babies and he often wondered if he would know what to do.

The truth was he didn’t, but he learned fast.

Holding Donnie for the first time was one moment in Alan’s life he has never forgotten. Alan stared at his tiny nails trying to comprehend fingers and toes being that small. Donnie had chosen that moment to stare back at Alan, his unfocused eyes somehow seeming focused and determined. Funny thing is, that look was the one that Donnie still has now, focused and determined.

Now almost forty years later Alan had seen his little Donnie and Charlie grow from tiny infants who would fall asleep to Alan singing “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" to the strong, intelligent men they were today.

It was hard to believe that they had kids of their own and Alan was a grandparent. Alan really enjoyed being a grandfather. He loved hearing two year old Maggie shriek ‘Pop Pop’ whenever he saw her. It made him feel like a million bucks every time! Charlie’s daughter was the new apple of Alan’s eye at just a few weeks old, making Alan a grandfather for the second time.

What he wouldn’t do to be able to have Margaret here to see this, witnessing her sons as loving and doting fathers. It was a small pang of sadness that he carried in his heart and felt that the boys on some level did too. Alan didn’t dwell on it often, he just tried to be double the grandparent and spoil the kids rotten.

A phone rang, shaking Alan out of his reverie. He picked up the phone and read the caller ID. He smiled softly; it was Don.

Answering, he said, “Hello, Donnie.”

“Hi, Dad. You’re not busy, are you?”

“Nah, just sitting in the sun room with a good book.”

“I have something to tell you, Dad.” Alan could hear the exuberant smile in his son's voice. “Wanted you to be the first to know, Elle’s pregnant! I’m gonna be a dad again!”

And me a grandfather again!
