well, the thing is that the lyrics were taken literal in the Third Reich, and of course Germany tries to steer away from that as far as possible. So even the fourth and third generation after cannot deal with the fact that our ancestors (or, well, grandparents) were actually so ethnocentristic as to say we are the best race...and other people(s) are less equal, you know...and that's why some songs/gestures/terms are not pc in Germany, and any Nazi connection is worse than any other offense you could make in the sense of singing or gesturing. I was told to my face by a professor once that he thinks I am uconciously a Nazi because I sued the word "Tschechei" for the Czech Republic and not the PC term "Tschechien"...and I go there like every two years and barely love a country or its people more than them...and yet I used the "wrong" word without even knowing it...so that's the situation in Germany. It's an endless debate, but I understand completely that the third stanza cannot be sung here without offending more than one whole generation.
and it is extremely hard for many Germans to come to another country like the US and see the flags everywhere, because we are very careful not to be too proud.
It was interesting to read the last line in your comment, because I had not considered the display of the USA flag to be extreme pride unless it was on something extraneous like a car. Or maybe it's the stars and stripes in logos that is extreme? Now that I think about it, I wonder how many other countries incorporate symbols from their flag into logos.
