I possess a finite amount of good taste, and I choose to apply it to books, music, snacks, and congee flavors. Crabmeat and roe congee:

It's a thin sheet of sponge cake smeared with whipped cream and rolled up. In the States, it's a Little Debbie thing, chocolate flavored, covered with chocolate icing and wrapped in pairs. In Hong Kong, you can buy it in logs, in mini-logs, or by the slice. They're dry and gross in every conformation. I feel terrible for those people who tried to go on vacation and ended up trapped in a quarantined hotel having a disgusting Swiss roll for brekkie; it's like being served a giant middle finger by the HK government. Without even any tea or coffee, according to the newspaper!

Not surprisingly, there is no such thing as "Swiss rolls" in Switzerland :-) (at least, not that I knew; and I think that given my appetite for sweets and pastry I would know if there were anything made up of sponge cake, whipped cream and chocolate icing...). reminds me a bit of my last trip to Amsterdam where we ate asparagus with melted butter and boiled eggs but no "sauce hollandaise" - a dip frequently served with asparagus in Switzerland.

In case your comment was not ironic: I think over here in Europe this type of cake is called "roulade".

It's similar to what we Swiss call "Roulade", of course the roulade is infinitely better ;)

I always pick up a Swiss roll slice or two when I'm near Chinatown (in NYC). I don't get a flavor (unless it is vanilla or something?), it's just delicious light sponge cake with a thin layer of cream rolled into a log and then sliced.

Don't forget the rendered beef fat-- a key ingredient to their tastiness!

amazing...why cannot the states institute said policy...I would be maddening yet intriguing to find my next parking ticket bundled with a nutter butter, memories of forth grade lunches

Actually, where I come from, that being Trinidad, our swiss rolls are made a bit differently. We smear a kind of jelly of some sort (could be strawberry or cherry,it's red in colour)over the cake then roll it.Then roll that in white sugar. It tastes really great actually.
