Let's Talk About Sawyer

So... my corner of fandom's relationship with Sawyer is complicated. Always has been. He's kind of a complicated guy. No, I don't neccesarily mean that in a good way, Sawyer, but not neccesarily in a bad one either. But I will admit, he's really good at playing with us.

So, it was Amber who originally got me on to watching Lost. She just wouldn't shut up about it, so during the summer I happened to notice when it was on and watched it a bit, meaning that I got the episodes in the wrong order. This forever alters your perception of a fandom. Hence, my first exposure to Sawyer was with Charlie following him around until he read to the baby from his car magazine. Sweet, intriguing, definitly a good impression. Then the next thing I saw was Confidence Man, which both made me cry and made me dislike him very very deeply. Then he threw Kate around and ooohh, irredeemable hatred. But he sort of wormed his way back into my good graces just by being so damn witty and snarky and tortured and maybe - just maybe - fixable. Then he got shot and kicked around and I just wanted to hug him and look after him and hit Ana really really hard. Then he got better and he and Kate had those moments that were just so so hot, and he treated her like a person instead of a little girl like Jack. And he was someone to go to when I just hated Jack so much. Which brings us to tonight.

His flashback confidence man persona absolutely makes my skin crawl. It did originally and it does now. I find it very disturbing. But I also don't find it to be him, not the way he is on the island. Yeah, he's defensive and sarcastic, but it's different, he's not... slimy. I dunno. Even at his worst, on the island he doesn't provoke revulsion from me. Anger, yeah, but not revulsion.
So, I totally got taken. Everyone else saw the con, apparantly; it blindsided me. I just didn't think... hurting Sun? What's he got to gain from this? I underestimated his need to be the adversary, and he can't be that if he's got no power. He had me all the way through - when he stomped out of the jungle I was cheering for him, that he got one over on Jack and Locke, wickedly pleased at their comeuppance. Then I realized slowly that he didn't just play them. He played me Kate to get to them. All of it, "Will you read to me?" "The weave's wrong" (like he could tell in the dark, but I didn't think to question) he USED that outcast bond to get what he wanted, and he lied.

It's still easier to forgive him than Jack.

The twist with Charlie was brilliance itself. Very nice.

Me, now? I'm going into the forest to find my horse and be zen for a few days while I figure out what to do next. There's a reason I spend more times with equines than humans.
